forza il capitano. Great fucking match. He came out with a new contract, a new haircut, and obviously a new game. Beat a bunch of defenders and scored the winner. He made konko look dumb quite a few times. Raneri is retarded for getting that involved, and neddy is fucking retard for making that stupid challenge at the end. Whenever nedved doesn't like a call he bitches and makes stupid tackles shortly after. He should know better.

good game for Ale, looked a lil frustrated in the 2nd half and I daresay was upset at being subb'ed but a great goal and was looking threatening...DF was fantastic once again, all 4 did a great job...What can we say about the referee who once again made some shocking decisions...the 1st yellow to Neddy was asinine to say the least

I'm still worried about Del Piero. Sure he was good yesterday, but he looks very unfit. Under Deschamps, DP seemed to have finally lost a lot of weight and was a lot more lightfooted. Yesterday DP looked overweight again, worse than it has ever been.

Nocerino was one of the few positives I take from yesterday, but a ballwinner like him becomes a little redundant when you have a stale midfield, like we had.

Ranieri Hails Juve's Great Spirit

The Bianconeri managed to beat Genoa in what proved to be a difficult clash for the Old Lady, even though in the end Juventus proved too solid for the Grifoni.

An unspectacular but very solid Juventus side defeated Genoa on Sunday evening to remain within 3 points of Inter in the title race.
For this reason, Coach Claudio Ranieri was extremely upbeat about his squad at the end of the clash against Genoa.

"We're a team which fights and has a great spirit," he commented. "We must analyze the entire game: this Genoa has conceded so far 8 goals, and the goal we scored is the second they suffered from an action following the one against Milan.

"Therefore, it wasn't easy to score against this team, which played well in the second half," continued the former Chelsea coach.

"It was difficult for us, we knew it. We should have decreased the rhythm because they were after the goal and needed to do the game."

Ranieri Furious After Seeing Red

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri let it fly at the referee after his team's 1-0 win over Genoa.

Claudio Ranieri was sent off for the very first time in his career as he howled his protests, and just moments later, Pavel Nedved was given his marching orders.

While admitting he had lost his cool, the Juventus coach called for the wrongs to be righted.

“It is true, I was tense with the referee, but I hope that Pierluigi Collina will view the incident and take action,” he said, in no mood for reconciliation.

"I am always in favour of referees, so tonight I will keep quiet. I was sent away from the pitch and I accept it.

"There was tension in this match, but we did not generate it."

Returning to the result itself, he was satusfied.

"We are a team difficult to beat," he said. "We need to look at the figures – Genoa have conceded eight goals, including tonight’s, and this was only the second from open play after the one against Milan.

"It is not easy to score against Genoa and they played well in the second half. We knew it was going to be tough and needed to slow the tempo a bit more, as they were the ones taking the initiative."

On the chances of challenging for the title, however, he was still evasive: "I have always said I have a good squad and we are slowly gelling. Certainly with a win you gain more confidence and belief in your abilities.

"However, if Inter start running away, nobody will be able to catch them, but the great thing about this season is that it is still open."

Legrottaglie: We Are A Tough Team

Juventus beat Genoa on Sunday evening to keep within three points of Inter in the title race after eight matchdays in Serie A.

Nicola Legrottaglie yet again produced a great performance for the Bianconeri as the Old Lady defeated the Grifoni at the Olimpico stadium.

"Today it was tough, against an in-form team that played with three attackers and took advantage of the wingers," he commented at the end of the game.

"It wasn't easy for us, but we showed once again that we know how to suffer."

The former Chievo Verona player hailed Alessandro Del Piero for the winning goal and not only.

"This win must be dedicated to the captain, after weeks where he fought against these rumours," explained Legrottaglie. "We're happy, as we did not concede a goal and Buffon was great on a save. We're really a tough team."

Juventus are now all alone in second place.

"It's nice to be up there, because you live a different atmosphere," admitted the defender. "Whoever was there can understand. This team has champions who are used to being up there.

"However, even though our objective remains that to finish among the top four, we will annoy others. And so far we are succeeding."

The fact he asked for a personal trainer shows he knows this himself.

Ranieri: “Only the three points count”

Legrottaglie's day after his birthday was unforgettable, but fellow birthday boy Claudio Ranieri never would have thought he would be celebrating... with a sending off. This decision by referee Banti was the first of his 21-year career, and it came just one day after turning 56. It was such a new experience for Ranieri that he still has doubts about what really happened: “I can't tell if he sent me off or simply told me to move away – the Manager commented speaking to Juventus Channel – it's the first time for me so I don't even really know the difference. In any case, what counts is that we won, and we did so against an excellent team. They’d only conceded one goal not from a free kick or penalty before tonight. I'm very happy, even if we really should have slowed the game down more in the second half: we won keeping a clean sheet and we're still close to Inter Milan. The League would be less interesting if one team increased their lead and we have to try and prevent this”.

this is interesting

OK, here's my match report.

Great for the win. But that's the only real positive I could take out of this match. Both clubs played way below their potential. And contrast this with the 1-0 win over Torino at the Olimpico, this next 1-0 victory there was a night-and-day contrast in ugly.

We deserved to win in better play, but we almost deserved not to in how we got lax and couldn't close it out. We should have been up 2-0 or 3-0 in the first half, and the second half was just dreadful. Players got too lazy to keep possession and create upfield, instead doing the tired thing of taking ridiculous long shots at goal and handing over possession.

Too many players got in a punchy mood on the pitch and it almost cost us points -- and I'm including the likes of Del Piero, Nedved, and Ranieri here. Where was our team leadership to get us focused on finishing off this match instead of bitching and sniping? Call their response deserved or not, in the end it only served to hurt the team -- not help it. Very disappointing behavior from these three, IMO.

Genoa sucked in the first half. Their back-passing in their own end was horrible and treacherous, and only our clumsy finishing kept us from finishing this one out in the first half. Genoa couldn't even combine more than two passes before losing possession on the offensive half -- making it easy for our dicey backline situation.

The second half saw Genoa take the majority of possession, create some chances, are require Gigi to save our asses on occasion. Our offense was marked by laziness, slowness, and an inability to look for anything more than a cheap goal.

Ratings:

Buffon - 7 - Did everything we needed. Kept his cool. Kept the team focused when captain. Great handling when we needed it. A couple of key saves. For lack of a better alternative, I'd have to say MOM.

Grygera - 6 - Put in some good crosses in the first half. A foolish header that went awry was saved by Legro and Buffon from being anything dangerous. Disappeared for almost the entire second half.

Legrottaglie - 6.5 - A minor mistake here and there, but otherwise he was solid and exactly what we needed in CB in this situation. I worry about his foul troubles. But otherwise, the guy has made me say, "Criscito who?"

Chiellini - 6.5 - Steady as a rock. A couple of reckless tackles, but otherwise made no major mistakes. He's really doing nicely in a pinch at CB again. Too bad he also offers a bit on the defensive wing too, but I'll take it. Our most trustworthy player on the back line.

Molinaro - 5.5 - I've seen him play much worse, but he could play a lot better. What I did like is that he was very cautious and careful with ball control. He didn't try to do too much himself, and he passed to a free defender whenever he got in a stick. He'll need to continue that to earn a regular role on the defense. But his marking of Papa Waigo was dreadful in the second half, and his screw-up almost cost us a goal if not for a nice Gigi save. Also didn't offer any real service deep on the wings.

Salihamidzic - 4.5 - I don't know what he was doing on the pitch, and neither did he apparently. Sky'ed over terrible shots and crosses. Added nothing to the team. Why Ranieri didn't pull him is a mystery, but he also should have given him better instructions. The man was lost out there. May as well have fielded Alena Seredova. At least then we'd have something pretty to look at during the match. Gigi would have been happy too.

Nocerino - 6.5 - So much better as a destroyer than as a right wing. Good pursuit on the ball. Dug them out. And sure, he can't cross for his life. But in that position we didn't need it.

Zanetti - 5.5 - His fine form this year seems to be hitting a low point. Where was the Zanetti from before? Not involved much, and not contributing enough.

Nedved - 6.5 - Neddy's back. OK, the week after next. Good pace, good ball pursuit, and great cross for the goal. On the downside, he let his temper and attitude hurt himself and the team. I'm surprised he waited to the last second of the match for his ticket out of this match.

Del Piero - 6.5 - Some great moves and play late in the first half. The goal was cheeky, but he made some nice footwork and runs before. On the downside, when the captain loses his cool like that, the team suffers. He needs to keep a cooler head. And his icy reaction to Ranieri subbing him was, IMO, unprofessional. He's capable of much better leadership than this. Disappointing sideshow to an otherwise decent technical game. Though he is, unfortunately, too slow these days and allows defenses to catch up too often.

Trezeguet - 6 - Few touches in any creative places in front of goal. So he had to settle for ball distribution at the post. Eh. Not bad, but this is what you get from one-touch Trez some games depending on the service.

Subs:

Palladino - 7 - When he came on the pitch, he seemed like the only player on the offensive half of the pitch who's head was still in the game. He was focused. He looked to create and make the clincher goal. But he wasn't getting much help from teammates who looked too tired or who were too busy bitching. We needed 4 of this guy out there late in the second half. Some good, constructive, and creative play while he was on.

Almiron - NR - Not on long enough/involved enough to really say one way or other.

Coach:

Ranieri - 4.5 - Team looked unprepared and unmotivated. No killer instinct to finish off the match. His presence did not add to the team's productivity. And his subs were late and, in the case of not having a plan nor a replacement for Salihamidzic - not helpful enough. The ref may have ejected him, but he may have done us a favor. :(
spot on Swagger

One point i wanted to comment on is about ranieri and closing off the games. I mean in the 2nd half it was evident that we needed the change in the midfield just to give that spark that we needed to finish them off. We waited and waited but palladino wasn't given enough time and we needed to replace brazzo who was defending more than attacking.

Ranieri needs to work on that and just like Andy said we need to control our temper better, as these games will not get any easier. Which leads to the next point about the coming games which will be really heated as we have the Napoleatan and the Interesti.

anyway overall the win is the most important thing here, also we forget that our first half was very good. Good to see Legro playing so solidly

Captain puts his signature again

This is Del Piero signature week. Tuesday he put one on his contract with Juventus, renewing it until 2010. Sunday evening he put his signature with a decisive goal in the match against Genoa: a tap-in from a Nedved pass, worth three points, that allow the Bianconeri to remain alone in second place, three points behind Inter Milan. Nedved and Ranieri were sent off near the end. Next Saturday night, the away game against Napoli.

It was up to Juventus and Genoa to close Day 18 of the League, with a match that had become even more interesting after the other results. With Inter Milan trying to increase their lead, Ranieri's team needed a win to stay close behind and remain in second place on their own.

The fixture against Genoa was always going to be interesting, but even more so due to all the former Juventus players in the Genoa squad. Under Manager Gasperini, former Juve players Di Vaio, Milanetto, Sculli and Konko all started the match, while Masiello and Paro didn't play. Ranieri responded by employing a 4-4-2 formation again, with Buffon in goal, Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini and Molinaro in defence, Salihamidzic, Nocerino (a former Genoa player), Zanetti and Nedved in midfield, and Trezeguet and Del Piero up front. Everybody was expecting a great performance from the Captain in particular, as he'd just renewed his contract, and the fans at the Olimpico chanted his name endlessly.

Ranieri's team dominated the beginning of the match and there was a dangerous Nedved run on the left wing. Genoa responded on the counter-attack after 7 minutes when Di Vaio forced Legrottaglie to close on him to avoid serious problems. Chiellini, perhaps remembering last year's match, in which he scored in the same goal, tried his luck from outside, but the ball went high. The Bianconeri improved as time went on and they created their best chance after 18 minutes. Grygera ran on the right wing and crossed for Trezeguet's header; Rubinho stopped the ball on the ground. After 22 minutes Nocerino headed the ball into the box, but Nedved and Trezeguet got in each other's way and the Czech player wasn't able to shoot.

The first half was dominated by Juventus. Another chance came after 31 minutes when Del Piero ran in from the left and Rubinho had to make a difficult save. Genoa's most dangerous player was Di Vaio, especially when closed in from the left, as he did after 34 minutes when his left foot shot went wide. Juventus' captain was in top shape and he added another joy after the contract renewal at the 36th minute: Nedved crossed and he scored from close range. He could have got a second soon after but Rubinho saved his perfectly taken free kick. This was the last incident of the first half. The break came with Juventus winning deservedly.

The second half opened much in the same way. Del Piero took a free kick and Nedved volleyed, but Rubinho saved. However, suddenly Buffon's match began. The big keeper had to gather a few easy balls, but he also had to make some kind of a miracle after 55 minutes to deny Sculli, who had ran in from the right, just one minute after Gasperini had put Leon on in place of Di Vaio. The second substitution came after 70 minutes, forced by Sculli’s injury: he left his place to Papa Waigo, a very fast striker. At the first chance, the former Cesena player (who scored two goals against Juventus last year) forced Chiellini to clear for a corner. The kick was taken, and Borriello's header was saved by Buffon.

Ranieri began making some changes to his team after 75 minutes and in the space of seconds he replaced Del Piero and Zanetti with Palladino and Almiron. Gasperini put Fabiano on for Rossi, but the match script didn't change: Genoa trying to equalize and Juve attempting to go on the counter-attack, especially thanks to a tireless Nedved. After 88 minutes, Ranieri was sent off when he complained for a decision against Palladino. But the worst sending off was Nedved's, which came right at the end of the match, as the Czech player will be missing next Saturday's evening match at Napoli.

Molinaro Thanks Buffon

Juventus defender Cristian Molinaro has thanked Gianluigi Buffon after the goalkeeper spared the youngster’s blushes during last night’s win over Genoa.

The Bianconeri were leading 1-0 when Molinaro mistimed his backpass to Buffon. Genoa forward Giuseppe Sculli picked up the loose ball and was clean through on goal, however the Italy number one pulled off an outstanding save to prevent the Rossoblu earning an equaliser.

Juventus held on for a priceless victory and now move clear in second place, just three points behind league-leaders Inter. “Luckily, we have the best goalkeeper in the world,” said a relieved Molinaro.

“Apart from my back pass, so quickly intercepted by Sculli, they didn't have many chances.

“We played a good match, especially in the first half, and we were very dangerous on the wings. These three points are important as they allow us to stay near the top.

“Now we need to concentrate on one match at a time, trying to win them all, building up to the game against Inter Milan.”

Juventus next face a tough trip to the Stadio San Paolo to face Napoli, before welcoming Milan’s conquerors Empoli to the Stadio Olimpico the following Wednesday. Then comes the much anticipated Derby d’Italia between Juventus and Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on November 4.
