Super Juventus Thrash Empoli
Juventus 3-0 Empoli
David Trezeguet scored a superb hat-trick as Juventus enjoyed a happy Halloween with a 3-0 victory over Empoli
Juventus went into the game still raging after the scandalous 3-1 defeat to Napoli at the weekend.
The Bianconeri were without the suspended Nicola Legrottaglie, Giorgio Chiellini, Pavel Nedved and Antonio Nocerino. Alessandro Del Piero started from the bench, while Tiago made only his second start of the season.
Empoli boss Gigi Cagni was minus the services of the in-form Antonio Busce. Luca Saudati led the line up-front by himself, while 20-year-old wonderkid Sebastian Giovinco was once again left on the bench.
Empoli showed they were no pushovers in beating Milan 10 days ago and they had their moments early on. Only some excellent defending by Domenico Criscito and Zdenek Grygera denied IgliVannucchi.
The first real chance game on 11 minutes when Criscito found space in the Empoli area and his effort was parried by Daniele Balli.
Five minutes later the Empoli 'keeper nearly performed a howler but fortunately Tiago couldn’t profit.
The away side then launched a dangerous counter-attack and Grygera did well to stop Saudati going through.
On 25 minutes Francesco Marianini unleashed a powerful shot but it was deflected past the post.
There was little to note in the next 15 minutes or so, other than the slow pace of the game that was suiting Empoli down to the ground.
Iaquinta wasted a promising opening on 42 minutes by overrunning the ball, but all in all it was a comfortable first 45 minutes for the away side, with Criscito’s chance on 11 minutes being the only real opportunity of the game for Juventus.
Juventus started the second half with intent and Trezeguet headed over from a Raffaele Palladino cross.
Five minutes after the restart Juve were awarded a penalty after a foul by Balli on Trezeguet. The Frenchman stepped up himself and struck the ball past the 'keeper. It was the Frenchman’s eighth goal of the season.
Two minutes after the goal Empoli risked going two goals behind but Trezeguet was offside.
The Bianconeri eventually doubled their lead on 62 minutes and Trezeguet was inevitably the scorer, rising high to head home Tiago’s free kick
The Portuguese midfielder was having a good second half and he was involved in Trezeguet’s third goal on 70 minutes. Tiago’s shot was parried and Trezeguet put in the rebound to complete his hat-trick.
The home side played out the remaining 20 minutes and had mercy on their opponents when injuries to Balli and substitute Rey Volapto meant they were reduced to nine men. Indeed striker Saudati was forced to play the last 13 minutes as an emergency goalkeeper.
