Serie A Preview: Juventus-Roma
Juventus host Spalletti’s improving Roma side as the Champions look to keep their 10-point lead intact. This should be a well-contested encounter as Roma have already eliminated the Bianconeri from the Coppa Italia this season.
BACKGROUND
Champions elect Juventus face the Capital outfit in what is possibly the trickiest tie left of their domestic campaign. The bianconeri are yet to face the likes of Fiorentina but Roma represent the most dangerous side left in their Serie A calendar. Capello’s men sit a commanding 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals and a slip seems unlikely now. Recent history has favoured the home team in this fixture with Capello’s men getting the better of the Giallorossi since his controversial defection to Turin.
If Don Fabio can continue his sides league dominance over their Roman rivals Juve will have the Scudetto firmly within their grasp. Juve are at full strength approaching this tie, however Capello will be wary of the threat posed by Spalletti’s record-breaking team.
Juventus have gone from strength to strength since the arrival of Capello whilst Roma struggled in the wake of his sudden departure. Two seasons on a side that was always packed with talent is starting to realize its potential. Luciano Spalletti’s appointment from Udinese has seen a drastic change in fortune for a club that had been in decline. With a Champions League spot looking probable, Roma fans have reason to be optimistic for the future. A Coppa Italia triumph early this year ended Juventus’ recent supremacy in this fixture and handed them a place in the semi finals of the competition. Last weekend's 2-1 win over Messina ended a mini slump for the Giallorossi. After a record-breaking run of 11 consecutive wins took Luciano Spalletti's side into contention for the fourth Champions League place, the capital side went out of the UEFA Cup to Middlesbrough then lost to minnows Ascoli. Nothing but a win will do if Roma are to secure a Champions League spot for next season.
FORM GUIDE
Juventus
The Turin side have been consistently good all season and have only conceded 5 goals at home so far. Capello’s side secured a draw with Milan that has kept them top of the league by ten points and although going down 3-2 against Werder, Juve managed to progress in the Champions League after a 1-0 win on home soil.
Roma
The Giallorossi’s recent run includes a record breaking 11 consecutive wins. A loss to Middlesborough away and a shock defeat to Ascoli brought an end to their run, but victory over Messina last weekend has seen them back on track for the Champions League.
TEAM NEWS
Juventus
The Bianconeri will field a full strength side for this clash. Chiellini is the only player that has not regularly featured for Capello as the tactical has experimented with various options on both flanks, but with Zebina unavailable, Zambrotta will be switched to the right to accommodate the talented youngster.
Roma
Spalletti’s side has been severely weakened of late and the Giallorossi will be without some key players for the game. Francesco’s Totti’s comeback is ahead of schedule but he is unlikely to feature before may. With De Rossi’ sidelined and Chivu missing Roma will be without the core of their side on Saturday. With Nonda and Montella missing may opt to play with no recognized strikers, instead fielding Brazilians Taddei and Mancini in attack.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Juventus
Giorgio Chiellini has the talent and potential to become one of Europe’s very best fullbacks. The youngster has not always found himself in Capello’s starting 11 but his talent is there for all to see. Going up against the likes of Roma’s Taddei and Mancini on Saturday would be a tough ask of any defender in Serie A but Chiellini can further prove his worth to Capello and perhaps Lippi with a good perfomance.
Roma
Mancini’s form picked up and suddenly Roma were on fire. The Brazilian is at the centre of most of Roma’s attacking play. With their focal point Totti missing from action, Mancini will look to show rumoured suitors Juventus what they are missing. Quick and inventive, Mancini can terrorise most defences on his day.
PROBABLE STARTING XIs
Juventus (4-4-2):
Buffon - Zambrotta, Thuram, F.Cannavaro, Chiellini - Camoranesi, Vieira, Emerson, Nedved - Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic
Roma (4-4-2):
Curci - Panucci, Kuffor, Bovo, Cufre - Daccourt, Aquilani, Alvarez, Perotta - Mancini, Taddei.
PREDICTION
This would have been a more closely fought encounter if Roma had their best players on the pitch but with so many absentees Capello’s side should prove too strong for the Capital outfit.
