Serie A Preview: Juventus-Inter

Yet another “Derby D’Italia” is upon us at the Stadio Delle Alpi in this midweek tie, although surprisingly this time it’s not a match worth the scudetto for both sides, as the two heavyweights have entirely different motivations for this game.
BACKGROUND
In fact, it could be said that Inter are playing merely for pride and for the satisfaction of beating their second most hated opponents (besides Milan of course), because they are not fighting to win the scudetto this year after of a terrible start of the season, while Juve certainly are. The Bianconeri started off the season with a remarkable winning consistency and constantly held a lead over Milan, defending champions and nr.1 favorites to reclaim their Serie A title. Last summer it was thought that Inter and Milan would dominate the season with Juventus slightly behind them. But that was before Juve pulled off a massive double coup on the last day of the transfer market: defender Cannavaro came over from Inter and Ibrahimovic from Ajax, both of whose positive contribution to Juve’s solid season cannot be over emphasized. Along with earlier signing Emerson, these three have become irremovable elements of Juve’s line up as the team started off the season like a rocket.
Meanwhile, it seemed Inter had done everything wrong all over again. Despite a super-human Adriano at the beginning of the season the new players in the squad didn’t gel as was expected and the absent-minded Nerazzurri conceded a lot of goals against weak teams and that soon cost them a massive amount of points. Coach Mancini gave an impression of insecurity as he shuffled around his line up an awful lot. In the last few months though it must be said that the team has been playing more as, well, a team, and in fact they have earned about the same amount of points as Juve and Milan since the new year started. Overall, Inter have never lost any match apart from the second Derby against Milan in Serie A and both the Euroderbies against the Rossoneri. This fact ironically gives the latter team hope in a Juve slip-up tonight so they can come back to with a point of them, or, in case of an Inter win, back in 1st place.
Both teams are coming off a very painful elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals. For Juve to lose against Liverpool was a terrible blow as they were considered superior to the English, who are indeed only fifth in the Premier League, and because the CL is a tournament that has a special meaning to the Juventus faithful after several lost finals in recent years. But once again it was not to be, Juve crashed out deservedly after two inexplicably below-par performances, especially the decisive home game which ended 0-0 (they needed just a single goal to qualify). Meanwhile Inter lost, just as they did in the Serie A, to bitter rivals AC Milan 2-0 and 1-0, despite having about three times as many shots on goal as their opponents over the two legs, in which keeper Dida played the games of his life. If that wasn’t painful enough, they face the unpleasant prospect of playing four European games behind closed doors next year after the facts we all know about which happened in the second Euroderby. In spite of all this, both teams managed to pick themselves up last weekend by easily winning their home games against Lecce and Cagliari, which shows they are both in good form despite their European disappointments.
TEAM NEWS
Juventus
Zebina, Trezeguet, and Montero are the players unavailable through injury for coach Capello.
Inter
A longer list of unavailable players to “Mancio”: Recoba, Adriano, Materazzi, Van Der Meyde, Veron (all injured with varying problems of varying seriousness), Burdisso (personal problems), Davids (supposedly curing himself in Holland somewhere, in fact probably just hiding out from all things Inter and contacting new clubs).
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Juventus)
The temperamental Swede has been a revelation for his team all season as it wasn’t expected he would get accustomed to life in Serie A so quickly after several years in the Dutch Eredivisie. He also shrugged off his arrogant antics since leaving Ajax and showed he has a winning mentality, incredibly scoring much more now in Italy than he ever did in a single season in Holland. Perhaps it’s because he most easily scores from difficult positions and goes into trouble with easier chances somehow. In any case, it’s likely he will remain an important striker for Juve for many years to come.
Obafemi Martins (Inter)
When considering the minutes he’s played for the team, his average goal ratio is highly respectable by any other striker’s standards. Went through a slight goal drought recently but found the net again last weekend. Cited by many italian defenders as the most un-markable striker they’ve ever played against, he has lightning-quick speed and is also creative and unpredictable. Let’s just hope Inter can hold onto him for many seasons after this one.
POSSIBLE STARTING XI’s
Juventus (4-4-2):
Buffon; Birindelli, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Emerson, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero.
Inter (4-4-2) :
Toldo; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Mihajlovic, Favalli; Ze Maria, Cambiasso, C.Zanetti, Kily Gonzalez; Martins, Vieri.
PREDICTION
This should be a very balanced match on paper, but Juve’s motivations might be stronger for this one as they have a Scudetto to fight for while Inter are comfortably 3rd with a 5-point lead over the side closest below them, and 14 points behind Juventus. Nevertheless, this difference is unlikely to be very evident in the match itself and I fancy Inter to get at least a point on a pitch where they usually do suffer.
