Serie A Preview: Juventus-Inter

Yet another “Derby D’Italia” is upon us at the Stadio Delle Alpi in this midweek tie, although surprisingly this time it’s not a match worth the scudetto for both sides, as the two heavyweights have entirely different motivations for this game.
BACKGROUND

In fact, it could be said that Inter are playing merely for pride and for the satisfaction of beating their second most hated opponents (besides Milan of course), because they are not fighting to win the scudetto this year after of a terrible start of the season, while Juve certainly are. The Bianconeri started off the season with a remarkable winning consistency and constantly held a lead over Milan, defending champions and nr.1 favorites to reclaim their Serie A title. Last summer it was thought that Inter and Milan would dominate the season with Juventus slightly behind them. But that was before Juve pulled off a massive double coup on the last day of the transfer market: defender Cannavaro came over from Inter and Ibrahimovic from Ajax, both of whose positive contribution to Juve’s solid season cannot be over emphasized. Along with earlier signing Emerson, these three have become irremovable elements of Juve’s line up as the team started off the season like a rocket.

Meanwhile, it seemed Inter had done everything wrong all over again. Despite a super-human Adriano at the beginning of the season the new players in the squad didn’t gel as was expected and the absent-minded Nerazzurri conceded a lot of goals against weak teams and that soon cost them a massive amount of points. Coach Mancini gave an impression of insecurity as he shuffled around his line up an awful lot. In the last few months though it must be said that the team has been playing more as, well, a team, and in fact they have earned about the same amount of points as Juve and Milan since the new year started. Overall, Inter have never lost any match apart from the second Derby against Milan in Serie A and both the Euroderbies against the Rossoneri. This fact ironically gives the latter team hope in a Juve slip-up tonight so they can come back to with a point of them, or, in case of an Inter win, back in 1st place.

Both teams are coming off a very painful elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals. For Juve to lose against Liverpool was a terrible blow as they were considered superior to the English, who are indeed only fifth in the Premier League, and because the CL is a tournament that has a special meaning to the Juventus faithful after several lost finals in recent years. But once again it was not to be, Juve crashed out deservedly after two inexplicably below-par performances, especially the decisive home game which ended 0-0 (they needed just a single goal to qualify). Meanwhile Inter lost, just as they did in the Serie A, to bitter rivals AC Milan 2-0 and 1-0, despite having about three times as many shots on goal as their opponents over the two legs, in which keeper Dida played the games of his life. If that wasn’t painful enough, they face the unpleasant prospect of playing four European games behind closed doors next year after the facts we all know about which happened in the second Euroderby. In spite of all this, both teams managed to pick themselves up last weekend by easily winning their home games against Lecce and Cagliari, which shows they are both in good form despite their European disappointments.

TEAM NEWS

Juventus
Zebina, Trezeguet, and Montero are the players unavailable through injury for coach Capello.

Inter
A longer list of unavailable players to “Mancio”: Recoba, Adriano, Materazzi, Van Der Meyde, Veron (all injured with varying problems of varying seriousness), Burdisso (personal problems), Davids (supposedly curing himself in Holland somewhere, in fact probably just hiding out from all things Inter and contacting new clubs).

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Juventus)
The temperamental Swede has been a revelation for his team all season as it wasn’t expected he would get accustomed to life in Serie A so quickly after several years in the Dutch Eredivisie. He also shrugged off his arrogant antics since leaving Ajax and showed he has a winning mentality, incredibly scoring much more now in Italy than he ever did in a single season in Holland. Perhaps it’s because he most easily scores from difficult positions and goes into trouble with easier chances somehow. In any case, it’s likely he will remain an important striker for Juve for many years to come.

Obafemi Martins (Inter)
When considering the minutes he’s played for the team, his average goal ratio is highly respectable by any other striker’s standards. Went through a slight goal drought recently but found the net again last weekend. Cited by many italian defenders as the most un-markable striker they’ve ever played against, he has lightning-quick speed and is also creative and unpredictable. Let’s just hope Inter can hold onto him for many seasons after this one.

POSSIBLE STARTING XI’s

Juventus (4-4-2):
Buffon; Birindelli, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Emerson, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero.

Inter (4-4-2) :
Toldo; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Mihajlovic, Favalli; Ze Maria, Cambiasso, C.Zanetti, Kily Gonzalez; Martins, Vieri.

PREDICTION

This should be a very balanced match on paper, but Juve’s motivations might be stronger for this one as they have a Scudetto to fight for while Inter are comfortably 3rd with a 5-point lead over the side closest below them, and 14 points behind Juventus. Nevertheless, this difference is unlikely to be very evident in the match itself and I fancy Inter to get at least a point on a pitch where they usually do suffer.

It's all about confidence. We crashed out against Liverpool and it showed early on against Lecce when Juve fell behind early. The important thing was the way Juve responded against Lecce by scoring 5 times. I think this has helped their confidence plus the fact Milan lost (lol)!! Inter will be difficult opposition but Juve backed by the Drughi, and the whole Curva Sud should get the job done 2-0, or 3-1.

If Juve can beat Inter, then Lazio on Sunday it would do wonders for their confidence with the Milan game looming large. Forza Juve!

I know this won't be a popular idea, but.......how about we change our kit to balck and red stripes, just for this one game, then we'd have no trouble beating them.....:D

Thats pretty funny.......:D
Maybe if we sneak the players' kits in with the laundry of all the cardinals at the Vatican before the match... and we don't use color-safe bleach....

Though seeing the College of Cardinals all wearing black and white stripes the morning of the match would be pretty cool too... :cheesy:

Capello demands Derby focus Tuesday 19 April, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has asked for concentration as his side prepare to face Inter in the Derby d’Italia on Wednesday.

The Bianconeri are now in control of the Scudetto race after moving three points clear of Milan, but Capello wants his men to remained focused so close to the end of the campaign.

"We’ll play against Inter with no thoughts about Milan in our minds," stated the tactician. "There are seven games left, one more difficult than the previous one.

"Every side in the Division has got something to play for, whether it be survival, the UEFA Cup or the Champions’ League.

"It would be ideal for us to go into the away game at Milan with our three point advantage still intact."

The Nerazzurri are out of the Scudetto race but the Delle Alpi boss expects a tough game tomorrow night.

"They are always difficult to play against," he warned. "Even if our League position allows us to play with a certain amount of tranquillity."

Capello is also looking for his men to make amends for the first game between the two clubs, when Juve surrendered a two goal lead in the 2-2 San Siro draw.

"We gave them oxygen back then," Capello continued. "We had closed the game but then allowed them back in.

"Inter have some great players who can change any game in an instant. They still have some important champions."

Juventus have named a 19-man squad for the tie but David Trezeguet, Ciro Ferrara, Jonathan Zebina and Paolo Montero are absent with injury.

Emerson is included but Capello won’t make a decision on his use until just before kick-off.

Squad: Buffon, Chimenti; Pessotto, Birindelli, Zambrotta, Thuram, Cannavaro, Masiello; Tacchinardi, Emerson, Nedved, Camoranesi, Appiah, Blasi, Kapo, Olivera; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Zalayeta.
