Capello cools Del Piero comeback Saturday 22 January, 2005

All signs pointed to Alex Del Piero replacing Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Brescia, but Fabio Capello is not making it easy for his captain.
“You will see whether Del Piero plays or not,” said the Juve boss in his press conference. “Ibrahimovic doesn’t seem tired to me and he’ll have time to rest in the future.”
The fact Del Piero has been substituted repeatedly and even dropped from the starting eleven against Cagliari last week caused shockwaves, as his agent confirmed interest from Europe’s top cubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United.
He was set to take over from Ibrahimovic, who has been used almost non-stop in the current campaign, but even that small consolation could be taken away from him.
“I don’t think we need to rotate the squad with only one game per week,” assured Capello. “In a month the Champions’ League will start up again and everyone will have more space then.”
The Bianconeri certainly cannot afford to rest on their laurels at the moment, as Milan have closed the gap to two points and Kaka told newspapers that they have the better team.
“Milan are behind us, so it is obvious they would say that to boost their confidence. Juve have the advantage and if I’d been offered this position at the start of the season I’d have been overjoyed. All we have to think about now is beating Brescia.”
The Rondinelle have really struggled over the last month, but Juve will have to do without the injured Gianluca Zambrotta.
“Brescia are a tough squad on a purely physical level,” warned Capello. “They have quality, but can also clam up when it’s needed, while Andrea Caracciolo is a very dangerous centre-forward to face.”
It will be a special occasion for the former Milan and Roma Coach, who celebrates his 400th Serie A match.
“Just think, I never even wanted to be a tactician. I’m not one to sit behind a desk and did it for three years, but always had to go running after work to clear my head. It’s difficult for an athlete to stay away from the field and I slowly made my way up the ranks.”
His decision to join Juventus – a team he had played for during his career – surprised many, but not as much as his projected plans for the future.
“I would not take another Italian club job,” insisted Capello. “After Juve I’d enjoy an overseas experience, perhaps on an international bench.”
He had already been contacted for the England post before Sven Goran Eriksson’s signature, while the former Real Madrid boss has a strong following in Spain.
