Interesting argument as to what strikers to play.

First, I'm going to assume Juve will start by playing 3-5-2, rather than 4-3-3.

Ordinarily against a back three, such as Napoli's, I would play one genuine striker at most. That leads to either being able to completely dominate the midfield or at least one of the back three having to step forward to close the space and disturb the shape of the team.

Juve did that very well in Naples in the second half when Vucinic basically played trequartista and Aronica stepped out of the defensive line causing confusion.

With that in mind my inclination would probably be to start with Del Piero and Vucinic to try to drag Napoli out of shape.

However, with Napoli's weakness at set-pieces, I could be tempted to go with a more powerful front pairing to try to put them under as much pressure as possible, because they are not a tall side, so I could see the value, from that point of view, of starting with at least one of Borriello and Matri.

Still, my first choice would be to play 4-3-3, probably with Vucinic and Pepe playing off of Del Piero.

Fiorentina tactically destroyed Napoli in Naples earlier this year (game finished 0-0) playing 4-3-3 with Vargas and Cerci playing off Jovetic. Jovetic would drop into space and drag a CB out, while Vargas and Cerci ran into space down the side and in behind the CBs on the side of the back three.

It caused chaos and made Napoli change to 4-4-2 to close the space down the sides of their back three. The change to 4-4-2 knocked Napoli out of their own rythm, though, and they rarely threatened during the game.

Get Del Piero to drop into space between defence and midfield so that a CB follows him (probably Cannavaro) and then get Vucinic and Pepe attacking the space on the flanks.

Even if it doesn't create a lot, it is likely to force Napoli to keep their wingbacks quite deep and limit their own attacking threat.

The only thing with playing 4-3-3 is that Vidal or Marchisio needs to play deep because I wouldn't trust Pirlo to close down Hamsik.

Juve also need to keep in mind the trouble they had in Naples when Hamsik pretty much marked Pirlo out of the game for large periods. Marchisio and Vidal, therefore, should be prepare to drop deep and share to ball-playing burden with Pirlo so that Juve don't get stuck in their own half just because Pirlo can't find space.

Say what you want about the quality of Serie A, but other leagues just don't have games that produce this sort of interesting tactical confrontation.
Excellent post, as always Red. Pretty much agree with everything you said. And yeah just re watching the extended highlights of the 3-3 draw we had with them back in November, Pirlo really did have a stinker of a game. Not only was he totally shut down by Hamsik, he was misplacing passes and constantly getting caught out in possesion. Also fouled Lavezzi for the penalty, and fucked up the clearance which lead to Pandev's first goal.

Should be an extremely interesting game tactically as you said. Cant wait for this one, I reckon it has the potential to be game of the season in Serie A.

the naples game wast one of that streak that pirlo wasn't on form if i remember correctly ?
the one after the leg injury after which conte praissed pirlo for being a great man for playing even through he wasn't at 100%
one of those 3-4 matches where he did much more wrong passes than his usual self

Correct. If memory serves me well, Pirlo got his fifth yellow card that game and missed the next match against Cesena (which we won 2-0) He needed that rest.

Who thinks Marrone would be a good option in this game? Like Red said, Pirlo will have his hands full and needs someone at the back, Marrone can distribute as well as defend, all the same while making runs forward and giving some neat through passes.

yes but you would need to bench one from marchisio vidal , plus it may be a bad idea to throw him in one of the most important matches of the season

@Gerd He could always be a sub or start the second half if the first isn't working.
i agree on putting him in the second half if we have a secure result like 2-0 to help , but i wouldn't play him from the begining we cannot simply give a way a whole half for an experiment , personally i wouldn't even play with the 352 i hate that formation

:sergio: :wallbang: Crappy lineup tbh. Where is Caceres, and why is Borriello starting? I hope this is not the confirmed line-up.

This is a must win game. With Lazio, and more importantly Milan dropping points last night, we can close in on the red and black fuckers, while also putting some distance between ourselves and the duo of light blue faggots.

Yes that is indeed one shitty line up. C'mon Borriello cannot be playing off the back of the past 2 months.

Is this an afternoon game?
