Blog: Sorry Juve but Forza Milan!
A win for Milan away to Juventus this weekend would be the best thing to prevent Inter running away with the Scudetto, argues Tom Barclay
Serie A seems to be taking an all too familiar shape as we head into the second half of the season. Inter have established an eight-point gap at the top of the table, even in spite of their local rivals Milan producing a wonderful run of six wins in their last seven matches. In the interests of variety, Italy’s elite Division really needs a title race with more than one genuine contender.
And for this reason, calcio enthusiasts could really do with Leonardo’s team turning over Ciro Ferrara’s charges at the weekend. Juve supporters may not agree, but Milan presently look the more likely of the two sides of being able to pressure Inter.
It will take a minor miracle to prevent the Nerazzurri from taking three points at the weekend, as they take on a Siena side propping up the table and bereft of confidence. If the weekend ends with Inter 10 or possibly 11 points ahead of the Rossoneri, the campaign could be over already.
So why do Milan pose the biggest threat to Jose Mourinho’s winning team?
After a tricky start, including a 0-4 drubbing to Inter in the season’s second fixture, Leonardo’s elegant style is taking effect on the way the team play. The side has a nice balance to it – it has genuine footballing talent (Andrea Pirlo), grit and determination (Massimo Ambrosini) and youthful exuberance (Alexandre Pato). The arrival of David Beckham adds another dimension to their play, as has the return from injury of defensive legend Alessandro Nesta.
But Leonardo has also succeeded where Carlo Ancelotti failed – he is getting the best out of Ronaldinho. The toothy Brazilian may not be the creative genius he was during his pomp at Barcelona, but he certainly still has the skill and guile to unlock any defence. He is, once again, imposing himself more on games and allowing his talent to express itself – as his display in the midweek 5-2 victory over Genoa demonstrated.
Milan have more creative players in their team than Juve and this is the fundamental difference. Diego was bought to be that inventive trequartista but so far it hasn’t worked out, and after the former Werder Bremen man, Ferrara’s team look seriously thin on the ground for players capable of producing that defence-splitting pass.
I don’t think you can look further than Inter for this year’s title, but to keep it interesting, we need a Rossoneri victory at the Stadio Olimpico this weekend.
