No it doesnt and that wasnt my point..my point was that, they didnt play 3 defensive mids because they were "scared of Juve "
First of all happy new year to all and sundry

I know Gatusso and Ambrosini can be classed as defensive midfielders but who is the 3rd one. Surely it cannot be Pirlo as he is not a defensive midfielder. he may play deep but he is not defensive.

It is like saying Deco, Iniesta, Xavi and Fabregas are defensive midfieders just because they start their attack from deep in their own half

They play with Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka and 1 other striker and also have full backs that are better attacking than defending.

Milan is an attacking team not a defensive 1 and they have a certain formation they play and are used to under Ancelotti and try not to deviate it from it. They do not see the point in playing 4-4-2 when they dont have wingers by playing a striker in a winger's position.

The most attacking teams actually play with 1 out and out striker or in Roma and Man United's case without any.

Ranieri: "The break in the league came at the worst possible time for us as we had won three games in a row.

"We have to pick up where we left off but the players have been training well and they are hungry."

Baldini eyes maiden win

Silvio Baldini is hoping to break his duck against Juventus when Catania take on the Serie A high-flyers on Saturday.

The coach of the Sicilian side said: "I have never beaten the Bianconeri, but just having the chance to play such a great team is a huge motivation for me.

"I want to give the Catania faithful the joy of beating the best."

The Elephants have had a fine campaign under the 49-year-old so far and currently sit in a comfortable 10th position in the table.

They also possess two of Serie A's revelations this season, in the form of South American pair Jorge Martinez and Juan Manuel Vargas.

Baldini added: "We will spend the week thinking about getting a good result and I feel we have the players to do it."

yes i agree Milan is an attacking team, but i understand why others dont see it that way..I think the idea of them being defensive comes from the fact they play with one striker...and three central midfielders...which of course doesnt mean they are a defensive team nor does it mean they "played defensively against Juve."

And a happy new year to you too:)

Serie A Preview: Catania - Juventus

What: Serie A Matchday 18
Who: Catania (21 pts) v Juventus (35 pts)
When: Saturday January 12, 2008, 20:30 CET
Where: Stadio Angelo Massimino, Catania

With Serie A action returning after the Christmas break, the second of the Saturday games sees high-flying Juventus travel south for a tricky tie against mid-table Catania.

Three points are a must for the Old Lady if they wish to maintain any Scudetto hopes, whereas Catania will be looking to continue their strong home form which has helped them to 9th place, well away from the drop zone.

Catania on a roll at the Massimino

The Sicilians have a 5-1-2 record on their home turf, which means that 16 of their 21 league points have been earned at the Stadio Massimino.

Most recently, home victories over Udinese (2-0) and in the local derby against Palermo (3-1) indicate another sturdy performance by the Rossazzurri is on the cards when the Bianconeri roll into town.

With the January transfer window now open, reports suggest that defender Juan Manuel Vargas could be leaving Sicily for bigger and better things.

According to Catania’s administrative delegate Pietro Lo Monaco, Roma are the favourites to capture the signature of the young Peruvian known as the club’s 'Roberto Carlos.’ Despite this distraction, the Christmas break may have provided Catania with the respite needed ahead of a tough set of fixtures.

After the Juventus challenge, Catania host Milan in the second leg of their Coppa Italia tie, holding on to a 2-1 lead from the first leg at the San Siro. This midweek fixture is followed up by a weekend trip to the capital to face Roma. Can Catania continue this brilliant home form into the New Year, starting with Juventus this weekend?

But more importantly, can they turn around their disastrous away form, starting with Roma next weekend? Testing times for coach Silvio Baldini and co…

Juventus aiming high

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, predictions regarding Juventus’ Serie A prospects ranged from being a mid-table outfit to a potential Champions League qualifier. However, the Bianconeri now seem almost certain to finish with a place in Europe’s biggest club competition, especially with AC Milan well behind in the race for the top four.

Can they go one better? Eight points separate Juventus from arch-nemesis and runaway leaders Inter Milan. Nonetheless, the gap would be closer if not for poor officiating in away games against Napoli and Parma.

In fact, Claudio Ranieri’s men last tasted a league defeat back in October, in that controversial match against Napoli. This level of consistency, if maintained, will keep Inter on their toes and the title race wide open.

The opening of the January transfer window has seen Juventus chase down Liverpool’s out of favour midfielder Mohamed Sissoko and Hamburg’s Dutch sensation Rafael van der Vaart. The club is also reportedly in the race for Catania’s Vargas. There are even reports that former Juventino Gianluca Zambrotta may return to his former club.

On the flip side, it appears as if flop signing Tiago may be leaving the club he joined just months ago. The transfer period is proving to be an exciting time in Turin. Nonetheless, Ranieri will be keen to ensure the transfer rumours do not effect the team’s performance as points dropped in games such as this Catania fixture will see the Bianconeri out of the Scudetto race sooner rather than later…

TEAM NEWS

Catania

Striker Babu is still doubtful after missing the club’s last ten league matches with an ankle injury. Gennaro Sardo is suspended after picking up a red card against Reggina. Gionatha Spinesi is back from his suspension to help make up the front line.

Probable Starting XI: Polito - Sabato, Terlizzi, Stovini, Vargas - Baiocco, Edusei, Biagianti, Izco - Martinez, Spinesi

Juventus

Mauro Camoranesi’s thigh injury will keep him out of this fixture, although a return in late January or early February is expected for the right-winger. Jorge Andrade and Jean Alain Boumsong are out indefinitely with knee and thigh injuries respectively.

Probable Starting XI: Buffon - Zebina, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro - Salihamidzic, Nocerino, Zanetti, Nedved - Del Piero, Trezeguet

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Catania - Juan Manuel Vargas

The left-back has been in scintillating form this season. The Peruvian has been as solid as a rock in the Catania back four whilst providing great run through the midfield and into the final third. Baldini would love to see him add to his tally of two goals for the season.

Juventus - David Trezeguet

Trezegol has hit the net 13 times in Serie A this season and is in career-best form. He is the man which Catania must watch for the complete 90 minutes, as one lapse will see his name on the scoresheet. It is just a matter of time before Domenech will recall him to the French squad, surely?

PREDICTION

This is certainly not a walk in the park for Juve. Catania will try to nullify the numerous scoring options in the Juventus line-up, and will rely on Martinez and Spinesi to do the damage at the other end. However, Juventus will be looking to control the middle of the park with Cristiano Zanetti in the thick of things. Furthermore, with Buffon in fine form and the Juventus front line on fire, I expect Juventus to snatch a goal from somewhere, and travel home with the hard-fought three points.

Baldini Tells Catania Fans: Your Sicilian Not Juventino

Catania boss Silvio Baldini has called on the home crowd to show his team support during this weekend’s clash with Juventus at the Stadio Massimino.

zoom - galleria The island of Sicily is renowned for being a hotbed for Juventus fans, and this is particularly the case in the city of Catania.

With Juventus travelling to Sicily’s second-largest city tomorrow night, much of the home crowd is expected to have split loyalties over which team to support.

Baldini however has demanded that they cheer on his side and not Juventus.

“This game is a very big occasion, but there will be lots of Juve fans and that is a bit of a shame,” the former Lecce Coach explained.

“I’d like the place to be completely full of Catania fans because we are in Catania.

“I want to remind the Sicilians that you can have Juve sympathies, but you have to support Catania when the two meet as you are from here and not Turin.”

Catania face a difficult task if they are to get anything from the game, although Baldini believes that this can be achieved with a bit of luck.

“We will need a slice of luck because it’s tough to beat really top sides without that,” he said.

“Finding their weaknesses will be tough, but you have to manage it. Gionatha Spinesi will be crucial for us and Giuseppe Colucci can be our secret weapon.”
