Pepe surely plays great offside traps and knows a lot about defending. He will surely make an excellent defender.

But since our RBs know about defense just as much as Pepe does, maybe it will be useful to play there someone who can help Krasic in attack.
In any case, I expect us to continue conceding a lot of goals, maybe even more than usual, if Pepe plays fullback.

Right now Grygera gives up 1 goal per game by himself (calculated). All this while not crossing half. It cannot get worse. It just can't. We have nothing to lose.

So, I take it every one is okay with a CB duo of B&B and shifting your best CB out wide.

Amusing.
I would actually prefer:

-Barzagli - Bonucci - Chiellini
------------------------------Pepe
-------------Melo
-----Aquilani-----Marchisio
Krasic---------------Martinez
-----------Matri

Melo or Marchisio to cover Pepe. In Marchisio's case, he's forced to do that anyway lol.

Actually, given Delneri's ridiculous system of defence - with everyone getting incredibly narrow - the fullbacks probably just about have to do as much defending as the CBs do.

I really dislike how Juve set up to defend under Delneri.

Not shifting, but benching :D

Our best CB is far away from his best nowadays...
If we're going to bench everyone who hasn't been up to scratch lately, then we won't even be able to play the game :D

I can see where you're coming from. Even if I think it's mainly the right side that is being kept narrow. Haven't really noticed the same thing on the left.

Grosso has been going almost as narrow as the RB, it's just that Marchisio/Pepe then often drops into what is almost an orthodox LB position, so that side isn't so exposed.

Possibly. I wasn't really talking about being less exposed though.
In a lot of games I just felt our RB positioned himself so narrow that he was basically a CB during big parts of the game, unlike our LB who (tried to :D) cover(ed) his side in a more regular way.

I could be wrong though, defence isn't really my strong point :D

It varies from game to game.

Delneri's defensive system makes no sense for Juve.

It was fine at Samp where he had a pretty mediocre backline, with no outstanding players, so it was fine for them to go very narrow and try to stop any player being isolated, because that was less of a risk than leaving Samp players to defend one-on-one.

At Juve, though, packing the centre of the pitch is foolish. The best part of Juve's defence is the CBs, so they should be give more responsibility and fullbacks should be left to defend wide-ish.

Chiellini and Bonucci are being marginalised by the system. Look back through the season at the number of goals Juve have conceded from crosses that were dropping between the goals, but the CBs were nowhere to be seen because the system dictates that they go too far to the near post and the fullback ends up in the middle of the goals where a CB ought to be (Ibrahimovic's goal and Cavani's first spring to mind, but there have been others). You are always going to be in trouble when a fullback has to defend a high ball against a CF.

The primary job of a CB, in my book, is to win headers to clear the ball. Delneri's system means Cheillini and Bonucci often can't be in position to do that.
