didn't watch any of today's matches but based on some short vids this was some pure comedy gold. i mean brahim diaz finished the game with zero fouls committed let alone a yellow, and watch this:

Too much emphasis on athletic ability and tactics. Less skill and creativity in the game. With too much money in the game there is less loyalty and passion. Players are playing for clubs they don't give a fuck about. So they play to do a job rarely to you see players fighting to the death anymore.

You're right to a certain point. I watched some Juve matches from mid 1980s, when we were the best team in the World. The level of football was ridiculous. Almost as if it's another sport. The number of defensive mistakes, goalkeeping mistakes, the tempo and athleticism are something you don't see even in lower levels of today's football.
I also watched highlights from WC 1990. I was young and I never noticed it at the time, but that was also some weak-ass football.
Imo football reached its zenith sometime in the 21st century when they found a perfect combination of skills and athleticism. Perhaps during Barca's great days, or perhaps a little before or after. Ever since it's on a downfall and athleticism took over. Nevertheless, this football today is still miles ahead of what your fathers used to watch.

You have to consider they played on potato field, balls and shoes not created with modern technology, it can contribute to mistakes. Defensive organization maybe not as good as now but they played rough and throwing tackles everywhere without real protection from referees. They weren't as athletic as today footballers but the level of talent certainly higher back then. To call it weak ass football is absolute nonsense. Player like Platini or Maradona, to dominate during that era they were really football gods. Maybe if they play right now they would do the same

Try to find some matches and watch them. You will be shocked at the level of football. Indeed, the state of the pitch, the ball the shoes, contributed to a great level to the difference between then and now, but there was a difference, and a huge one. Pure talents like Platini and Maradona were great, but the rest were weaker than their today's counterparts.
Another reason for all this was that 3 foreigners rule. Not a chance back then to create this City, or Ronaldo's Real. No mixture of football cultures where one could borrow the best from the other. The moment they allowed more than 3 foreigners in the starting XI in Serie A, La Liga, EPL, Bundesliga, football became better.

IMO if footballers back then had the same training regimes, nutritions, sleep schedule etc as today footballers I think they would be much better. Most of today footballers looks good because they are fast and strong.
