Local officials in Rome have urged fans to keep calm and have even laid on an exhibition of dancing girls before the game to try and take the aggression out of the atmosphere.

Capello deletes Roma memories Friday 4 March, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus boss Fabio Capello insists that he will archive his Roman past when he returns to the Olimpico on Saturday night.

The tactician led the club to only their third Scudetto in 2001, but has since been labelled as a ‘traitor’ following his decision to join rivals Juve last summer.

Capello, plus the ex-Roma duo of Emerson and Jonathan Zebina, are expected to receive a hot reception but the Coach claims he is just focusing on the match.

"I’m concentrating on the game and nothing else," he stated. "I’ll have time to think about my past when I’m sitting down on a couch, not when I’m sitting on the bench."

He added: "I’m just thinking about my Juventus side. Everything else is of no interest to me whatsoever.

"It is a stadium in which I experienced some wonderful things but I’m not expecting anything from the fans. I’ve had no contact with anyone from Roma and I will sleep peacefully tonight.

"I think I left some good things on a human scale in my five years at the club. I’m satisfied with my work there and I think that I did well."

The Old Lady desperately need a win to maintain their leadership of Serie A, but the side know they’ll face a tough test against the Giallorossi.

"They will have some real motivation to do well tomorrow because they are chasing a place in the Champions’ League," he added. "They’ll want to win.

"We must stay alert, especially against their trident of Totti, Cassano and Montella, even if a header or a free-kick can often decide these sorts of games."

The tactician, who welcomes back David Trezeguet after illness, was set to field a trident attack but that may now be scrapped after Lilian Thuram picked up a fever.

"Trezeguet will start on the bench and my system will depend on whether Thuram plays or not," he explained.

"He has a slight temperature but I think he should be fine. It will be an important game but we are all in good shape."

Squad: Buffon, Chimenti, Bonnefoi; Pessotto, Birindelli, Cannavaro, Zebina, Thuram, Zambrotta, Ferrara; Emerson, Tacchinardi, Camoranesi, Blasi, Olivera, Kapo, Appiah; Zalayeta, Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero

Del Neri pledges a new Roma Saturday 5 March, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma were crushed when they last faced Juventus, but Gigi Del Neri has promised a radically different performance this evening.

“We have improved in our whole way of spreading out on the pitch,” assured the Coach who was defeated 2-0 in Turin back in October. “It will be a very important test for us, above all so we can prove that Roma can be on a par with any team.”

The Giallorossi slipped down to seventh place in the Serie A standings following last Sunday’s surprise defeat at Palermo and must get a result to stay in the hunt for European places.

But there is so much more to this tie than three points, as the summer departure of Fabio Capello, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina make it second only to the Rome derby in terms of passion.

“Roma want to make their fans celebrate and will fight until the death to win this match,” reassured the tactician. “If the players are still battling away at the final whistle, then that would already be an important result.”

Nonetheless, the former Chievo boss was eager to calm the storm surrounding Capello’s comeback amid fears of crowd trouble.

“This is set to be a spectacular game of football and nothing more. I am sure that the fans will support us with the right attitude. Capello left in a bit of a rush, which created some bitterness among those he left behind, but Roma must never forget he helped them win the Scudetto.”

Capello also made the move to Turin less than three months after stating in a Press conference that he would “never join Juventus.”

“In football and in life, one must never say never,” smiled Del Neri when asked the same question. “You can’t tell what will happen, so I could stay here for five years or quit Coaching altogether.”

No major changes are expected to the line-up, though Francesco Totti returns from suspension to complete the trident attack with Vincenzo Montella and Antonio Cassano. The one doubt appears to be between Alberto Aquilani and Daniele De Rossi for the midfield spot, with Amantino Mancini relegated to the bench.

Dear romanista,
First of all welcome to the forum. I am happy for you that you support your team that hard, that you took the bother of signing in another forum just to tell them that you support Roma and you know they are going to win.
I really admire your will to support Roma although they rary win a thing. :)

About the comparision between Roma and Juventus, they are both good teams, but its a known fact that Juventus is a superior team overall. But thats just my opinion. Last year Roma was the better team, and that was clear when they were able to win 4-0 at home. But thats about it. The real difference between Roma and Juventus is that Juventus is a much more consistant team. They either win the scudetto or join the race for it. Last year we were really bad but we managed a 3rd place.
Just look at it from this prosepctive:

99-00 = 2nd place
00-01 = 2nd place
01-02 = 1st place
02-03 = 1st place
03-04 = 2nd place

Winning a trophy is a difficult thing to do, but keeping a good pace and winning the next trophy is the hardest bit.

Now about the Creatin issue: During that time all teams (including Roma) were using Creatin. The trail is about the fact that Juventus were outstanding during the years between 1994-1998 and that the players bodies were really good. Well let me tell you something, we managed to take the scudetto twice and 2 coppa italia finals and 2 supper cups and 1 CL final in the past 3 years with a squad that is less in quality than the one that was playing during the era between 1994-1998. The squad at that time was much deeper and sophisticated (I've been supporting Juve since I was 6). Even more the players were younger including DP, Ferrara, Tacchi ..etc. All adds up for better fitness.
About the players built, if you know Juventus is well know for their strick trainning sessions whether indoor our outdoor. Unlike many clubs, a player cannot just walk away and leave. This doesn't happen at Juve.
The Trail also stated that Davids was tested positive. Hellooo Davids just came from national team ... and hello De Beor also was tested positive for the same substace. How is it then Juve's problem??
Many players that used to play at Juve, e.g. Vialli, Ravenelli ..etc stated that they never took anything illegal.
So the case is very controvertial.. Milan, Lazio, Inter, Roma ..etc all used Creatin for their players the same way juve did if not more but they didn't win. Thats why they are not acused. Still Milan won a scudetto and noone seems to be worried about it. Its unfair. Creatin was legal to be used, they claim that Juve Abused the creatin and they are claiming that on GUESSES. Tests were done at that time, we were they all negative and no- idications were pointed until after the 1998 campaign? We have players that are built well and fast these days and they are still testing negative for any substance abuse.. Ohh god then in 5 years from now someone will come and say they were abusing.. This is non-sence in my opinion.

About Del Piero Vs Totti,
both are very good and talented players. The main difference is the behaviour. How many times did totti loose his temper and cost Roma or Italy a Vital player. Sorry but I don't want such a player leading my team. A player I cannot trust.
Totti is better compared to nedved because both play on the same place on the field.

About the transfer market,
we are not like Milan and Inter especially in the past 10 years. We don't have someone donating money for us to perform our transfers, the Angellis have finatial problems at FIAT. This is why we try to buy players that are cheap and ready to leave their club (or free).
This is why we got Capello, Emerson and Zebina from Roma last summer. By the way Sir Lippi was the one who suggested Capello, and its my understanding that he was the one who convinced him for the move.

Club mentality,
One of the most things I like about Juventus is their way of thinking. They alway want to win. 2nd place is a failure. This is the mentality that keeps us always hunting the scudetto. Plus they never throw their dirts to the press. If they have problems they solve them between the management and the players. This is why there are always fuss around Juve because they are always calm.

Last but not least the referee,
It really makes me laugh how people acuse Refs on favouring Juve. The ref is a human, Human makes mistakes. If you watch a match for Juventus Vs any team lets say Atalanta. If the Ref does not point to the spot for Juvetus and on the same game doesnt point to the spot for Atalanta you will see the media saying the Ref favoured Juve by missing a clear penatly.
In the past few weeks Milan's winner goals came very controvertial, did we see anyone in the media talking about them? Crespo's goal against Lazio was a clear offside. For god sakes he was standing with peruzzi. Serginho's goal was a foul on Cafu, a clear foul. Did anyone say Refs favour Milan.. No not at all. If Milan wasn't awarded those mistakes then they would've been few points behind. Still they managed to win because of a human error. This is life. So its non-sence to just acuse Juventus.

Finally, I hope you enjoy your stay at out lovely forum.. and again, welcome.

Gazzetta are saying that if Thuram is fit enough to start, which seems quite likely, Capello will play 4-3-3. If not it's going to be 4-4-2 with Pessotto at right back, Zebina in the centre next to Cannavaro and Olivera in midfield.
