Category: General

Alessio Secco, Juventus' sporting director, hopes that goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is crowned European Player of the Year.

Rumours suggest that the Bianconeri and Azzurri goalkeeper will be be named winner ahead of players like Thierry Henry and teammate Fabio Cannavaro, we won't know for sure until November 27.

“It would be fantastic if the Golden Ball went to Buffon,” said Secco in a radio interview.

“It would be excellent for him and for the club. It would also crown a special year, which has been amazing.

“It would be the icing on the cake. However, we have not received any confirmation from Paris, so for now we can only hope,” concluded the official.

The director of L’Equipe, Michel Dalloni confirmed that Buffon is one of the main candidates, along with Henry, Cannavaro and the incumbant, Ronaldinho.

“I would give the prize to Buffon, but it will be a very close call,” he said to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Buffon would be the first Italian to win the award since Roberto Baggio in 1993.

Meanwhile, it's rumoured that Juve midfielder Matteo Paro will be called up by Roberto Donadoni for the upcoming Italy-Turkey friendly on November 15.

His manager, Didier Deschamps, considers the 23-year-old to be the new Andrea Pirlo and Donadoni could decide to field Paro in Pirlo's usual role.

Source: Football Italia

I hope Gigi wins, & stays!
....... & if dunderheid :pumpkin: wants Matteo Paro for the Italian Squad, he'd better play him & not just call him up to prevent us playing him in our matches! That goes for all call ups from our squad, because we cannot afford to let players go, and, although it's nice to see them get a chance to play, I don't want him doing to them what he did to DP. We're not always going to be allowed to re-schedule ours matches because of NT call ups.
