Giovinco has said it himself. He doesn't have the stamina to both attack and defend which Nedved had.

Yes, Dribbles require a lot of energy, but u get a lot of the energy back when resting in between attacks. They are bursts of energy. And that is Gio's game.

But when you track back and defend, you are always running and have no time to recharge, this is what I felt at least. By the time you get the ball back, you feel your touches are heavier.
Thats why you need alot of stamina to do both attack and defend, something Gio can't sustain regularly.

Blanc and Secco should forget about a replacement for Nedved IMO. There is no need for him. We should change our formation and consist a team with Gio as a starter.

Buffon
Zebina Legrottaglie Chiellini De Ceglie
Sissoko
X.Alonso Marchisio
Giovinco
Amauri Del Piero

R U crazy?
We are more desperate for a better central defender than a central midfielder

Was about to tell him that. We are not that much in-need of a central defender, and I really find Mellberg, Chiellini, Legro, Ariuado, another one to replace Andrade maybe? will be more than enough.

Looks great. The defense could use a world class addition though..

Giovinco Generation

Instead of shelling out millions for Diego, Susy Campanale asks why Juventus don’t build their future around Sebastian Giovinco?

On Saturday evening we saw the birth of a new era for Juventus. It is fitting then that it should emerge in the baby-faced features of Sebastian Giovinco, a player who with the right guidance can become the Alessandro Del Piero for the next generation, or more aptly a Kaka or Roberto Baggio.

Against Bologna he was absolutely everywhere taking men on, providing assists, scoring goals and whipping in set plays, but above all else he loaded the struggling team on to his tiny shoulders and carried them back from the brink. This boy is ready to lead.

Giovinco has incredible talent, this is clear to all, but he has so far been trapped in the ugly Italian desire for tactical clarity. Baggio was famously dubbed ‘a 9 and a half’ because he didn’t quite fit into either role, but the Atomic Ant is even less easy to pin down. Trequartista, support striker or wide midfielder, he can cover them all. Yet perhaps the player he reminds me of the most is Kaka – that ability to run with the ball at breakneck speed, give the side a change of pace and absolutely terrify the opposition are all hallmarks of the Brazilian’s game.

Giovinco cannot defend very well, nor has he much stamina, so he would do better protected by an already-existing muscular midfield, letting Momo Sissoko be his Gennaro Gattuso. His introduction sparked Juve to life in the final half-hour against Chelsea, so who knows what would’ve happened if he had come on at half-time when heads were bowed and time was still on their side?

With the team ageing and in need of a radical overhaul, it is Claudio Ranieri’s duty to build the side around Giovinco and his fellow academy products Claudio Marchisio and Paolo De Ceglie. Juventus always pride themselves on being the only club side that can survive on its own income without the need for a benevolent patron, so why not construct a team from its own youth system? They were forced to do so in Serie B post-Calciopoli and discovered wonderful new talents that otherwise would’ve been lost to the endless loan spells around the country.

The millions proposed for transfer target Diego would be ill spent, especially as Ranieri has already complained he doesn’t fit into the tactical system. Imagine the Bianconeri side that could emerge with Giovinco, Del Piero and Amauri protected by an aggressive midfield. At last Juve could use the real characteristics of Italian football – ball to feet, quick passing and technique instead of trying to battle Premier League sides in a physical duel they’ll never win. It’s time we got back to what makes calcio great, starting from Giovinco

Can someone send this to Ranieri please

Giovinco has also caught the eye of The Guardian's Paolo Bandini:

"Giovinco rises above the rancour to lift Juve's mood
The Old Lady's young playmaker underlines potential in hammering of Bologna to bring respite to Ranieri after a turbulent week

All the Old Lady really needed was a nice young man to put the spring back in her step. At 22 years old Sebastian Giovinco might still look like a child but on Saturday night at Turin's Stadio Olimpico he proved himself to be anything but. In the first 45 minutes against Bologna he was the only Juventus player to manage a shot on target. In the second he added a goal, an assist and countless more deft touches and incisive passes to help his team turn a half-time deficit into a 4–1 victory.

"Juvinco is born," bellowed Gazzetta's front-page headline on Sunday morning, though the player can hardly be said to have emerged overnight. Giovinco first trained with Juventus at the age of six, and has represented Italy at every youth level from under-16 upwards. In 2008 his 25-yard strike against Honduras was one of few highlights for Italy's Olympic side in Beijing. Earlier in the same year he was named player of the tournament as Italy won the annual under-21 competition in Toulon.

An attacking player who professes to be most comfortable in the trequartista role (just behind the attack), but who has mostly played on the left wing thus far in Serie A, Giovinco has inevitably drawn comparisons with Alessandro Del Piero. Although he is nothing like the first, it has been some time since a player emerged from the club's Primavera (youth team) with such expectation resting on his slender shoulders. And they truly are slender. Listed on Juventus's website as just shy of 5ft 4in tall, Giovinco weighs little more than nine stone.

But if he is troubled by such a burden then Giovinco does a good job of hiding it. He had played only a handful of Serie A games on loan at Empoli last season when he batted away a question about his size by declaring himself "like Sergio Agüero and Lionel Messi". Nicknamed la Formica Atomica (Atom Ant), a reference to the Hanna-Barbera cartoon hero, by team-mates and fans, Giovinco has been unafraid to carry his teams on his back when necessary and on Saturday was responsible for almost single-handedly dragging Juventus out of their post-Champions League funk.

"Last year with Empoli I proved that I was capable of playing in Serie A," reflected Giovinco, who scored six goals in 35 games for the Tuscan side including a stunning free-kick that earned his team an unlikely draw with Roma, after Juve's win over Bologna. "All I needed was a bit of continuity, which I got by playing in the last three games on the trot. Before I was playing one game and then missing the next three."

If that sounded like something of a dig at manager Claudio Ranieri, then Giovinco was quick to follow it up with praise for the Tinkerman. Thanking Ranieri for allowing him more creative freedom in the second half, Giovinco insisted he had no complaints at being used as a winger in Pavel Nedved's absence and added that he was confident the manager knew his best position.

Giovinco's words and performance came as a timely boost for Ranieri following his public falling out with David Trezeguet. Despite having only just returned from a long-term injury, the French striker was livid at having been substituted by Ranieri during the second leg of Juventus's defeat to Chelsea, and was branded a "spoilt child" by his coach after complaining over the decision to the French magazine L'Equipe.

A divided crowd at Saturday's game attempted to show support for both sides but already the suspicion is that Trezeguet will not remain with Juventus past the end of the current campaign. Rather optimistic speculation in Italy has Trezeguet moving to Lyon in a part-exchange deal involving Karim Benzema, but in the likely event that such a deal does not transpire, Ranieri may well decide his team is now capable of proceeding without the striker.

It certainly won't hurt to know he has another shaven-headed attacking prodigy waiting in the wings."

I think we should definately decide real quick whether or not Gio can be a starter next year. That needs to be done by him starting the next 4-5 games minimum and there is no reason not to . If he is capable then we dont need a diego we need more of a camoranesi or Nedved who can cover attack and defend well. Im still convinced that Bastian Schweinstagger could fill this role but can Gio be as effective on the right side? Anyway people are to blindsighted here thinking you can play such attack and not worry about defense. We dont need to invest in another player that doesnt defend if we want hope for Gio. In my opinion we should worry about defense with maybe a replacement for Camo that doesnt neccesarily have to be world class. Better than Marchionni though. Get a good right back and bring back Criscito and we should be good. Maybe another surprise. I would expect the right back to be world class though if thats are main pickup in the offseason. I wouldnt mind a world class centerback either. Although I like Legro but he is getting older and Mehlberg makes me nervoud honestly. He could be our backup Rb though.

Anyway now that I am off topic from Gio...basically Gio needs to get thoroughly tested before we start making bids fo new players.

How about getting Andrade fit? He is certainly class in Deportivo.
A RB will be very important. Not only does that solve problems for that position, I think it will allow Marchionni to shine.
