Man of the match
Empoli are kicking themselves after wasting countless chances and hitting the woodwork twice, allowing Genoa to snatch a last-gasp draw.
The Tuscans were on Cloud Nine after their 4-1 demolition of relegation rivals Cagliari last week, Nicola Pozzi getting all the goals. This was another six-pointer, as after a good start Genoa were sliding back down the standings and without a win since early October, putting plenty of pressure on Gian Piero Gasperini's shoulders. The 3-1 home loss to Siena was particularly painful and made the axe a very real possibility.
Empoli hit the woodwork just 130 seconds in, as Pozzi got a touch to Sebastien Giovinco's cross from the left and it bounced on to the base of the far post.
Antonio Busce' nodded another Giovinco cross over and Empoli were pouring forward in waves. On the half-hour mark they had two fantastic opportunities to open the scoring in the space of 10 seconds. First Francesco Pratali's snapshot from 20 metres cracked against the upright, then Pozzi's follow-up was flapped right off the line by backtracking goalkeeper Rubinho.
Under-21 sensation Giovinco gave Empoli a deserved lead, but Genoa's defending was chaotic. Masiello failed to clear the ball effectively and Giovinco pounced to smash his shot under the bar.
Julio Cesar Leon came off the bench and within seconds forced a save out of Daniele Balli, but Giuseppe Sculli made a hash of latching on to the rebound.
Ivan Juric had penalty appeals waved away for a Lino Marzoratti challenge in the box. Giovinco was unlucky as he fell and accidentally clattered face-first into an opponent's shinpad.
Pozzi was tearing his hair out after a desperate Cesare Bovo intervention stopped him tapping in Giovinco's inspired assist. Giovinco picked up an injury and was stretchered off.
Having done precious little throughout the match, Genoa grabbed a late equaliser in the final minutes. Lucho Figueroa flicked on the ball for Masiello to nutmeg Balli from six yards.
