The Juventus striker Sebastien Giovinco has been trying to renegotiate his contract with Juventus for the last six months, and it seemed last week that the player was convinced that the club was now prepared to meet his demands for a wage of €1million a year.

He said last week: "I am really happy, the problems regarding the renewal have all been resolved,"

But it has now been reported that the Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco has blocked the deal, and is refusing to pay him any more than the other young players at the club are earning, which is €450,000 (around £6,000 a week).

The 21 year-old Geovinco, who is also an Italian international, feels that the offer is insulting, considering his talent and potential, and is expected to ask for a transfer if the matter is not resolved shortly.

It has been reported all summer that Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is a great admirer of the young prodigy, and has been monitoring his contract talks with interest. If the talks break down completely, as is now expected, we can expect an offer from Arsenal in January.

You have to give credit to Giovinco in this. Instead of moaning, he went on the pitch, showed his worth and now even our BoD knows he's worth the 1M p.a.

Giovinco’s contract situation at Juventus has become something of a soap opera over recent months, and he still seems no closer to inking a new deal.

The 21-year-old has been demanding a €1m-a-year salary, but sporting director Alessio Secco is only said to be willing to hand him a €450,000 pay packet, which is in range with the rest of the young players at Juve.

This morning La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Secco would not budge from this stance, and this led to renewed fears over the fantasista’s long-term future at the club.

However, Giovinco’s agent has now moved to calm the stormy waters.

"I can reassure everyone that all this talk about the contract is a fake issue,” Andrea d’Amico told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“The contract expires in 2011, not in 2009, and so for this reason we must all remain calm. There is a willingness from both sides to increase the contract.”

Giovinco put in an outstanding performance for Juve on Tuesday night during the 2-2 draw against BATE Borisov in the Champions League, creating both of Vincenzo Iaquinta’s goal.
