The following events all took place in 1978 :

1) Juventus won the scudetto
2) Liverpool won the European Cup
3) The Pope died
4) Fiorentina avoided relegation in the last day of the League
5) Inter won the Coppa Italia

Two years later, Milan's President got arrested and the team went to serie B.:D

The 5 events have all happened again this year...Will history repeat itself?

It’s a few days before the start of the summer training, during which the lads will get back into shape after their holidays and get ready for the new season 2005-2006. The start is set on July, 11th when the Bianconeri will meet in Turin to leave for Salice Terme, which will be the squad’s headquarters for the second consecutive year.

The Summer Village will be there too. It will welcome the thousands of Bianconeri fans who want to be close to their favourites during their stay at the famous spa town. The Summer Village will be a few steps away from the training pitch and will allow those who want to follow Juventus to live joyfully in an all black&white atmosphere. There’ll be plenty of surprises, don’t miss them!

“I had several physical problems last year and I had to stop for a long time. I’m alright now, I’ve spent my holidays in America with my family and I’m now ready for a new start; I just hope I won’t have any problem as I want to play this season as a protagonist.” David Trezeguet is sounding the charge: his ankle is not aching anymore and, after a one-month break, the Frenchman is looking for revenge over an unlucky season; the target of 100 goals in the black&white outfit is within reach: “Yes, only four more, and only eight to equal a hero like Michel Platini. However, talking about this last year did not bring good luck so I’d rather avoid thinking about it. It’s better to focus on working: the other lads had an exercise routine to follow during their holidays to keep in good shape, while my ankle needed some rest and now it’s not aching anymore. Since I could not work like them, it will be harder for me to regain the condition. Anyway, we’ll have more time at our disposal this year as we don’t have to play Champions League’s first qualifying round.”

David likes Juventus’s version 2005-2006. He doesn’t have a main target to aim at, although Champions League is always fascinating: “The roster is big and we have new high-level players; should there come some more, they’ll be welcome but we’re already competitive and we can win anything. Undoubtedly, Champions League is important to us; it is a tough tournament, where if you make a half time wrong or even just fifteen minutes, you risk to get out. However we’ll try again because we have what it takes to make it.”

On the day of the official presentation, Fabio Capello gives a clear idea of Juventus’s ambitions: “We’re an extremely competitive team. Besides the signings of Mutu, Kovac and Giannichedda, who can give a strong support on a technical level, we’ll have Nedved, Trezeguet and Emerson in good condition from the beginning of the season and this is very important. We have the right attitude, the right determination and we know each other well. We’re certain we can go far. The group will try to achieve the targets we’re aiming at.” He was asked to give an overview of their opponents: “The two Milan-based clubs in Italy, Chelsea and Barcelona in Europe”.

“Our competitive attitude is always the same and we’ll try to have it from the very beginning, to keep on winning.” Alessandro Del Piero arrived on the first day of the summer camp with the right energy and, like a good captain, he spoke on behalf of the whole team: “Last season ended in a great way and we have what it takes to repeat ourselves. We’ll be playing on three fronts, championship, Champions League and Coppa Italia and it’s the very Coppa Italia – he joked – to be our first target: in fact, we haven’t won it for a long time…”

Del Piero got serious again when he was asked about their most difficult opponents for next season: “Milan has an outstanding attack, made of great players, but Inter too is a well equipped team. On paper, the Scudetto race will be reserved to us and the Milan-based clubs but, as always, the playground will reveal the truth.”

Juventus’s season 2005-2006 was officially started yesterday. After being received by Mayor Sergio Chiamparino at the Town Hall in Turin, the Bianconeri moved to the summer camp at Salice Terme, where the team was presented to the press. President Franzo Grande Stevens opened the session and thanked, on behalf of the Club, “the authorities who allowed us to come back to Salice”. Then he addressed to the journalists: “You expect me to present the team but it’s Director General Luciano Moggi to be entitled to this”.

Director General did not need to be asked twice: “This team has won the championship having the best attack and the best defence; we added Mutu in attack, Giannichedda in the midfield and Kovac and Chiellini in defence, so I’d say that Juventus can be complete like this. However we’re following the transfer market carefully, should there be any good occasion.” Vicepresident Roberto Bettega, when asked about a possible trip to London, confirmed Director General’s words:

“We’re not planning any trip to London. Talking about this, I’m really sad for what happened recently. Back to football and in particular to the transfer market, things going on must not be necessarily English.”

During the official presentation of the team, Mr Antonio Giraudo summarized the situation about the Delle Alpi stadium: “There won’t be any change this season. During the year, a yard will be built on the outside of the venue and this one will allow works to be started at the end of the season; they are planned to be finished within two years. Meanwhile, I want to inform you that the sale for season tickets is going to be launched in one week’s time.”

Their enthusiasm is tangible, wearing the black&white shirt is a dream for many players. “Juventus is a top team”, Giannichedda said during his first interview as a Bianconero “this new adventure motivates me a lot. I’ll be working 100% to earn my teammates’ trust. We’re equipped to do well in every competition.”

The same wish to do well belongs to Kovac, the other new arrival:”I’m very happy to be here, Juventus is one of the strongest clubs in the world, I already knew the fame of all of the players before meeting them personally. Capello is one the best coaches in the world, I’ll do my best to play under his direction. I’m here to win on all fronts.”

With the end of Ciro Ferrara’s carrier, it’s now Pessotto to be the veteran in the team: “I’m old”, Gianluca joked, “but I still have the enthusiam like a young boy. I’ll put my experience at the team’s disposal, helping the youngsters to handle the feelings we all felt when we first got on the pitch wearing the black&white shirt. The advice I want to give to the new arrivals: they must understand from the beginning what playing in Juventus means, get on well with the group and learn their secrets.”

The start of the new season for Juventus is coming: on Monday, July 11th the Bianconeri’s summer camp is kicking off at Salice Terme. Before leaving for the site of the summer training, the team will gather in Turin at the City Hall Sala Rossa where they’ll receive Mayor Sergio Chiamparino’s and the Town Council’s compliments for their win in the championship as well as their best wishes for the next season.

Capello’s squad will then leave for Salice Terme. Like last year, they’ll stay at the Istituto Alberghiero and will train at the De Martino sports field. Nearby, the stands of the Summer Village will welcome the thousands of Bianconeri fans who will love to be close to their heroes during the team’s stay at the famous spa town.

Being a champion, on and off the pitch, and not only for the classy play but also for the faultless behaviour and mild character, means becoming an example, a model to imitate. The unforgettable Gaetano Scirea has been all this for any soccer lover and for a Bianconeri fan in particular.

Fabrizio Gregori, a songwriter from the Bergamo district, has found in Gaetano a source of inspiration and has composed a ballad dedicated to him: “Di qui non passa nessuno”. It was thus born a charity project, exceptionally sponsored by Maria Grazia Cucinotta: the proceeds from the sale of the CD single will go to the Committee “Crescere insieme al Sant’Anna”.

“Di qui non passa nessuno – the author explained – is a tribute to someone who has meant so much to me. When I felt discouraged, when I saw that those who were more cunning did succeed while I was remaining behind, Scirea was a point of reference for me. I used to look at him and say to myself: “You can succeed even being fair”. This song is my way to thank him”.

“We’re finalizing details for a tour in America in the month of August”. Commercial Director Romy Gai, during the presentation of the team at Salice Terme, confirmed that Juventus won’t leave for China in early August, while they’ll play two matches in North America. “We’ve decided to cancel the tour in China because we’ve had too many requests for our presence at commercial and charity events and we’ve decided to give priority to sports initiatives in such an delicate period of the season. I’m waiting for the last details to confirm two matches in North America, on August, 3rd in Toronto and August, 6th in New York.”
