I would like to point out to chxta that the problems of russia today weren't caused by the communists. Rather, it was capitalism that destroyed russia. the Soviet Union, while viewed as a Godless entity, was rather well organised. The perception many people have of russia is the image that was brokered by hollywood thru its movies potraying the Soviets as corrupt, and communism as a bankrupt system. My dad schooled in the Soviet Union, and remembers it as a clean, well organised country. Wages were paid on time, and everyone was assured of housing, work, and school. Contrast with modern day Russia, where some time ago, people protested their months of back pay with placards bearing pictures of Lenin!! The capitalists were swift to introduce drugs, crime, prostitution, gambling, and of course, to control it all, the mob. Add to this the every man for hisself philosophy of capitalism, and you have your mix for today's Russia, which cant afford its own military! So dont blame the communists. Yes, they believed that religion was simply a way in which the lords controlled the serfs, and so moved to ban religion. The capitalists have introduced "freedom" but you dont see them opening new churches.
I didn't meet the 140 million Russians, but in Moscow I saw a girl being dragged away by a group of men in broad daylight, my tour guide said that she'll be raped in all probability, I was told not to venture out of my hotel alone for fear of disappearing because I was an inoglemehik (hope I got that right), I heard gun shots (machine gun fire no less) in the distance, once again in broad daylight.
Now, all these happen elsewhere, I accept that. Hell, that kind of shyte, especially the mugging is common in Lagos, so I am not trying to sound like I come from heaven.
The difference is that the Russians do not seem to care.

The communists destroyed the moral fabric of the country, and that is what I am talking about.
Under communism, Russia was a tightly censored state, kinda like China now, where the only riots allowed are anti-Japanese demonstrations.
The capitalists came in to feel the vacuum, but capitalism and religion are 2 different things, as evident in today's Europe. The "freedom" brought by the capitalists is what enabled the lack of morals entrenched by the communists to flourish.

In Lagos, when the armed robbers strike in broad daylight on a traffic congested bridge, the first reaction of those not affected by the mayhem is "thank God it wasn't me". Sure, we castigate the cops for failing in their duty of providing basic security needs of the people, and generally decry it as a shame, but when it's time to take such actions as protest marches, what do Nigerians do? They say "it ain't my quarrel."
Does that indicate a caring attitude?

But the least you can agree to is this: unlike the Russian government, the Nigerian government cares what the world thinks about them and by extension us.
I know that you probably think that the whole EFCC thing is crap. And I think the same way. But the truth is (as concerns this discussion anyways) is that there's an attempt at window dressing here, that is simply absent in Russia.

Does moral fabric mean that the state frowns on crime, murder cheating etc? If it does, then I say that the Communists had the patent on moral fabric. Yes, dissent wasn't approved, but does the new "freedom" of capitalism allow dissent? I think the ghosts of journalists gunned down by the Russian Mafia for speaking out against their activities would say "HELL NO!!"
Look at America, the so-called home of the free. During the fifties and sixties, what was happening there? Blacks were getting lynched, and the state was looking the other way. If you said you were a communist, you'd be lucky to get a job sweeping a caboose. If you spoke out against the system and advocated changes thru resistance, you got shot. Period. No matter what your preferred method was. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and John F. Kennedy would attest to that. Mohammed Ali refused to go to Vietnam and lost his title. No matter that the courts gave him back his license to fight. The damage to the man was done.
Even today, actors who spoke out against the useless, and senseless war in Iraq got kicked out of their jobs. Look at Martin Sheen. He said no to the war and got his hugely popular show "The West Wing cancelled.

if the Nigerian government wasnt 32 billion dollars in hock to the rest of the world, it would hold up the middle finger to world opinion. the only reason the government of this country pretends to care is that it wants to get the debt reduced or cancelled. should that ever happen, the government would instantly shed its sheeps clothing and all the world would be able to say would be "My, my, what big teeth you have!!"
