Fear that if there was a STABILIZED, non-corrupt, westernized Ukraine sitting on his border that all Russians could look at and say "these people are just like me and now they're thriving, we should move closer to the west too" that is the greatest threat to Putin/Russian power and influence in the area.

What he hope to accomplish after the war ends is unknown to me.
Without chinese support and banned from Swift Russia is fucked. Russians are fucked even more than Putin and friends.
This is all so sad but the worst was witnessing how Europe and Nato gave up on Ukraina.
If we sent soldiers I very much doubt that Putin would've have the balls to strike a direct conflict

As far as Putin wanting to accomplish. It's delay the westernization of his sphere of influence. That's all he can do. Stay in power a little longer. There is no grand end game scenario or plan.

But if the choice is stand and do nothing as Ukraine ( a country with Russian speakers and many families with ties to your citizens) si moving closer to the west and closer to THRIVING or make them stop out of fear, he has done the second. Because this is how he maintains power and maintains control. Without control, he'd be ousted by a younger, stronger young Russian.

He's seen his country passed by and it continues to struggle and not develop. And now his WEAKER ally China is a superpower. Russia has become less and less important. So he must seize more control and more power to strengthen his powerbase domestically or he will lose EVERYTHING.
