That's why I like it, although it isn't my favorite brand of Funk music. I like the older more musical approach to Funk than the pop one on the early 80's.

Like the stuff from 71' to 78', you know. Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock, The great James Brown, Sly and The Family Stone.. Hell, Even Santana during that time had some great funky/soul tunes.
I'm not sure if you can call Dirty Mind "Pop"

Not with song lyrics such as

I was only 16, but I guess that's no excuse
My sister was burnin' to love me and loose

She don't wear no underwear
She says it only, gets in her hair
And it's got a funny way of stoppin' the juice

My sister never made love to anyone else but me
She's the reason for my, uh, sexuality

Showed me where it's supposed to go
A blow job doesn't mean blow
Incest is everything it's said to be

Btw @King of Kings, Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree just posted this about Prince.

Just 30 minutes before we went on stage in Vienna tonight I heard that Prince had died, I couldn't believe it. It was a very tough show for me to play. The word "genius" is used a bit too often and loosely within the music world, but I think Prince was the real thing, perhaps the most naturally gifted performer of all time.

I saw him play live several times, and his show at The O2 Arena in London in 2007 I would rate as the greatest concert I ever saw (Craig Blundell is agreeing with me now, he was there too).

The run of albums from Dirty Mind in 1980 through to Sign 'O' the Times in 1987 matches anyone in its sustained brilliance, and it was such a big part of my soundtrack as a teenager (some of you will know that The Ballad of Dorothy Parker from the latter album was on the mixtape made by my character in Hand.Cannot.Erase., which is pretty much what my mixtape would have been at that time in my life).

Tonight I made a humble attempt to sing his song Sign 'O' the Times, in fact just before we played David Bowie's Space Oddity. It's been a while since I recorded my version so I couldn't remember it very well, but I wanted to at least try it, it would have seemed strange to pay tribute to one unique musical genius and not the other. Farewell strange purple one, and thanks for it all.

I meant the musical approach, not lyrically. In the first part of the 70's three was more jamming, experimentation (meaning production wise, rawer sounding instruments, less reverberation and drum kits that sounded more natural) and less rules to follow and this goes for every popular genre in that time.

The closer it got the 80's the more "pop" it sounded. Not saying it became bad just saying it changed which is normal .

just on a sidenote: i don't think there is such a band as porcupine tree as of now :frown: they never officially called it an end, but wilson is so busy with his solo career that it seems impossible to see any pt material coming out in the foreseeable future. and that makes me a sad panda: a couple of years ago they gave the best show i've ever seen. pt is/was one of my favorite bands ever.

Anesthetize :touched: I'm glad I had the chance to see them too back in The Incident tour. Guess what song they played? Russia On Ice :touched: :touched:

Yes, Steven Wilson has said his solo project is what he's focused on right now and that it will be a while til we get another PT record.

Tbh when he decides to I hope it's not gonna be in the metal department anymore. It's kinda saturated. Time for PT to look for a new direction.

incident tour :touched: i attended this gig: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/porcupine-tree/2009/petfi-csarnok-budapest-hungary-73d7ca95.html they only played the beginning of russia on ice though. btw they sounded just perfect, the best i've ever heard from any band. wilson is such a perfectionist, you gotta admire him for that.

tbh i'm a metal head, i'll miss their more direct songs, but if they take a more experimental direction towards electronic instruments or odd time signatures, i'm in. just no more slow psychedelic stuff, i've heard enough of that from wilson i guess.

Our setlists were similar. They played Strip The Soul, .3 and Remember me lover instead of Way out of here and Normal. It was indeed an amazing concert.

Bigelf opened for them, such an interesting act. A guy singing and playing two Mellotrons at the same time with some Sabbath sounding guitar behind him and a wall of orange amplifiers. Cool band. :D

Well, that's the question, what will they sound like. From what I read one of them hates Jazz and is has to be Barbieri.

So what are the choices here? No idea. And no, I doubt he'd go back to his psychedelic tunes. I think Wilson probably wonders the same and that's why he doesn't want to get PT back just yet. He doesn't want to sound the same and probably has no idea what to do.

I found my old discman last night, and I laid on the couch with my dog and just listened to Prince all night and through the morning.

My poor Nico, so loyal and patient as my tears were rolling down my face and on to his head :touched: :sigh:

This hurts. This hurts real, real bad. Worse than Bowie, worse than MJ.

you lucky muricans, you got to see bigelf too, wow! awesome band.

you're most probably right about pt. wilson always came out with clear ideas and always been a musical traveler. let's hope pt will come back eventually.

btw if you liked bigelf, i'm sure you know bands like iq, flower kings, kaipa, amplifier, big big train, etc. that's still a pretty interesting scene (contrary to the metal scene), all of these bands have their own voices. also, i just listened to a band called "oceans of slumber". plenty of classic rock roots, female vocals, almost unbearably depressive lyrics (even for me, and i'm not too strong in english, i didn't understand all the words), but this recent record seems like a good listen anyway.

I'm not that lucky, being in Florida I get to miss the best concerts. They don't always come down here. And yeah, Bigelf is cool but I much prefer them live than on the records.

Of those mentioned I know the first 4 bands, didn't really like them so much. I'm not that big of a fan of neo Progressive Rock, it has to be kind of special like PT or Opeth, Anekdoten, Anglagard (when it comes to modern prog the Swedish scene is by far the best, isn't it), etc... Flower Kings is okay though. There's Marillion that's like a hit or miss kind of band - Btw I got to meet their Guitar tech for the last 10 years last year but I'll tell you about it later, got to get on the road - but they used to be more like a Genesis cover band. Oh, Echolyn is pretty good.

Wilson knows he can do anything he wants on his solo stuff, on Porcupine Tree, although he still writes most if not all the music he still has to kind of please the other musicians. And so far his solo career has been more than solid, great records overall, nothing amazingly unforgettable but solid.

Prices aren't that bad. $435 after fees for the whole weekend to see those 6 legendary acts is a hell of a deal.
