I would have no problem if the rep system was only allowed for topics NORTH of and including the Rookie/History forum. There tends to be a lot of rep points given for worthless posts in the hangout, as seen with the Beauty of the Day thread, and if the people continue asking for rep and becoming involved with quarrels this system is pointless. Personally, I would like to keep the rep system if and only if people do not abuse it and become too obsessed with it.

I say remove it. It fulfills no purpose, except that of indirectly enouraging spam and creating conflicts. People also tend to give positive and negative reputation after what they think of the person in question and his opinions, and not after the quality of his posts. It also wouldn't surprise me if people have created smurf accounts, for the sole reason of filling the green bars of their main ones.

Just FYI -- a little bit of history. The rep system was introduced as an alternate to the old, de facto system where people often made judgements about other posters largely based on their number of posts.

We can scrub all vestiges of any system for this. But organically, situations always seem to arise where one gets invented for it. And things like post counts become the metric...

Not saying it's right. But it happens here -- and in other forums.

The problem is that it's anonymous, IMHO.

We abolished post counts at the Ferrari forum for exactly that reason.

The posts (and the posters) now "speak for themselves"...

Just a thought :)

So Swag, just like I said... Remove the post count as well.

Agreed....

Some will argue that newbies won't be able to tell who are the contributing members, but they'll catch on soon enough.

Maybe instead of total post count, posts/day or posts/week????

I'd say join date is enough info for that.

I don't know. I like the post counts. It's often the case that I suddenly notice that some punter I hadn't noticed before has a couple of thousand posts, and then I notice the name a bit more. I don't think it's that big a deal - you could make posting anonymous and there'd still be a caste system. On slashdot.org, the membership number (effectively join date) is used in that way.

Its not impossible if you control where reputation can be given, and also what for. For instance, if the rep function was only allowed for posts over a certain number of letters, the problem of asking for rep will be eliminated to some extent. To be honest, I don't know how one can recieve reputation for a post that includes no more than three words, but that's just me. Moreover, if you limit reputation to only the sections regarding football...the reason this forum was built in the first place...you will eliminate the problem of reputation given for some unworthy posts. This might not solve every problem, however it will eliminate some..
