He was, but winning the ballon d'or had more to do with his team winning a lot of second rate trophies. Liverpool won the Uefa Cup, European Super Cup, The FA Cup, The League Cup and the Charity Shield and they kept mentioning how Owen won 5 important trophies with his team that season.

I mean.... the charity shield :shifty:

Raul won La Liga and made it to the CL semifinal. Raul scored 24 goals in the league (Owen scored 16), Raul scored 7 goals in Europe, all in CL, , Owen scored 4 in UEFA Cup. Raul scored 31 goals total, Owen scored 24.....but for some reason they chose Owen.

And Elber, Mendieta and Effenberg.

P.S: And Kahn.
I was thinking about Mendieta as well as he had a brilliant season, although he choked in the final.

Effenberg was a beast.

Raul should have gotten it. That's my opinion on the matter.

But either way, Owen should not have won it.

Feel free to fresh my memory, but wasn't Owen out of this world in 2001? I distinctly remember him being one of the worlds deadliest strikers at the time.
Raul was better that season. Owen was top few best of the world in that season, but not best player material. He was just a very clinical goalscorer, there has been other clinical goalscorers, more then him, that hasnt won individual titles, and understandable too, because goals are not enough to be considered the best.

And I have NOTHING against Owen, I actually liked alot when at his best, but nah, not Balon D'Or material, for sure IMO.
