ROME, Oct 14 (Reuters) - League leaders Juventus will move to within one win of equalling the record for the best start to a Serie A season if they beat Messina at the Stadio delle Alpi on Saturday.

The Italian champions have made a perfect start and top the division with a maximum 18 points from six matches, five points ahead of AC Milan and Fiorentina, who share second place.

A win on Saturday would leave them just a victory away from matching the record of eight consecutive wins at the start of a Serie A campaign held jointly by the Juventus teams of the 1930-31 and 1985-86 seasons.

Few expect them to slip up against Messina, who have yet to win a match and have conceded eight goals in their last two fixtures.

The only worry for Juventus coach Fabio Capello seems to be the prospect of losing some of his best players ahead of next Tuesday's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Midfielder Patrick Vieira is unlikely to play any part against Messina after leaving the field with a groin injury during France's 4-0 demolition of Cyprus in the midweek World Cup qualifier.

Giuliano Giannichedda is expected to take his place in midfield alongside Brazilian Emerson.

Juve's first-choice strikers, David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, are also nursing minor injuries and could take it in turns to play up front with Alessandro Del Piero.

In the other matches, AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi has shaken off a knee problem and is poised to make his first Serie A appearance of the season at Cagliari on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Italy international has been plagued by injury during the past two years. Two ankle operations limited him to just 11 Serie A appearances last season.

A successful substitute's appearance in place of Andriy Shevchenko or Alberto Gilardino would give Milan options for the Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven next week.

Fiorentina, who have yet to reproduce their superb home form on their travels, have a difficult fixture against Lazio in Rome where the home side will be aiming to extend their 100 per cent record at the Olympic Stadium.

It would put a thick line under the Juventus dominance of Italian football if we managed to equal the record set by the other two Juve teams. An honour that would send shockwaves across Europe.

didnt we tie this record in that disastrous season 2003-2004

I dont think so, but we had 10 straight wins the season before, tho not at the start of the season.

10?

Well possibly between all competitions (couldn't bother checking actually) but definitely not league wins which did not exceed 6.

Chelsea do this and the EPL is a one-horse race, a joke, rubbish.
Juve do it, and what?

I'm sure it did. Maybe not the season I said, but we did have 10 league wins in a row in one of our last Scudetto seasons, I cant really remember the season it was.

Difference is that even with a 5 point lead few consider it as an indication that they'll win the title, and that opinion is backed by recent history.Besides, neither of our rivals are doing too badly.

On the other hand, nobody expects Chelsea to slip up(although they could right now, 1-0 behind Bolton atm), Man Utd look out of sorts and Arsenal are shambolic without Henry.

No one expected anyone to challenge Arsenal twelevce months ago. Chelsea have a lot to prove. 4-1 to Chelsea at the moment BTW. ;)

Milan would look a lot less menacing if Shevchenko was out for half a dozen matches methinks.

You've hit the nail on the head actually. In the past decade or so any domination in the English game is absolute, Man Utd were all-conquering in their heyday, Arsenal of course had their incredible run, and now Chelsea are breaking records for most points and probably most consecutive wins as well.

And it's 5-1 already! Lampard and Drogba too.:fero::groan:

I agree on the Milan bit, although not to the extent of Arsenal missing Henry.

If I am not mistaken it was 2001-2002. We were not leading, and Gianni Agnelli past away wishing for a third star on the jersey. Del Piero and his team mates fired up so bad starting with the mind blowing goal agianst piacenza. We were not competing the CL that season due to early ilumination. I believe we did win 10 matches in the serie A that season in a raw.
