He tends to really overbuy though. What we need is a few very effective transfers and more outs than ins..
I agree and I don't think I'd accept his terms of deal. I wouldn't let him take the full control over the budget. If he insists then I'd say no thanks. Blanc would be good for us too, probably even better. DD should be considered as well.

Very few? I don't think so. We have to fix many positions and they are all a must. New CB, LB, RB and wingers should be a priority and I talk about big names.

Yes I agree we have many needs. So many needs we'll need more than next season; so spend it over two seasons. Buy only starters, we have enough average players to fill blanks until we can buy new starters the following season.

The ones that haven't gone so well:

    - Alberto Aquilani (£20m)
    - Robbie Keane (£19.3m)
    - Djibril Cisse (£14.5m)
    - Ryan Babel (£11m)
    - Albert Riera (£8m)
    - Andrea Dossena (£7m)
    - Jermaine Pennant (£6.7m)
    - Craig Bellamy (£6m)
    - Mark Gonzalez (£4.5m)

    The ones that have:

    - Fernando Torres (£20.2m)
    - Javier Mascherano (£17m)
    - Xabi Alonso (£10.7m)
    - Dirk Kuyt (£9m)
    - Martin Skrtel (£6.5m)
    - Pepe Reina (£6m)
    - Luis Garcia (£6m)
    - Yossi Benayoun (£5m)

Doesn't tell the whole story as there have been many smaller transfers in and out who you can't say did particularly well or badly, perhaps the same for some I listed.
Cisse's injuries are what destroyed him, so you can't blame that on Rafa.

And as far as I know the Babel signing was not his own doing. It was the director that wanted him.

Some of the transfers they have made ended up in profits as well, like Crouch, who wasn't even too bad for them. It's like buying a stock and watching it appreciate.

    Moreover, you forgot Agger.

It's hard to do that, but I do see what you mean.

For example, 3 new defenders are needed, badly. It'd be pretty expensive if we're talking about starters. While on the other hand we desperately need wingers. Having to rely on Giovinco and Palladino is a bad idea and nothing else. We'd still be weak and without a poacher. Our board is aiming for Dzeko, so having 30mln spent on him we'll have problems to make a good squad, considering our weak spots.

Could blame him playing most of the time on the wing on Rafa though...
Sure, injuries come into it a lot. Yeah, Agger needs adding.

Hence we need to buy players that will 'guarantee' us improvement. I know there's no such thing as a player that can guarantee quality, but it's something we should aim for. Buying decent players to cover the many gaps that need to be covered, will only result in a larger sum of money lost in the longterm and those players will have to be replaced again.

I dont want to see shit again like from Zanetti and Marchisio to Tiago and Almiron to Zanetti and Nocerino to Zanetti and Sissoko to Sissoko and Poulsen to Sissoko and Marchisio to Melo and Marchisio(highlighted the new players). In the meantime losing Nocerino, Tiago, Almiron and Zanetti for peanuts. While overpaying for every player we brought in, players we never really needed. The new pair was rarely an improvement. We bought and bought thinking we could get a decent player to improve the midfield. In the end it only cost money and never improved the midfield.

Considering how the players are now, Zanetti and Marchisio wouldve been the best pairing. It was the first pair of the list, the one we had in Serie B!

This is the mismanagement for you.

In all honesty, most of the time you revert to the mean, breaking even. At times buying players in the transfer market is akin to buying stocks in the stock market. There is always risk involved. Some you buy perform, others do not. It really takes a genius to win in the market most of the time, and even then you eventually take losses.

Looking at Benitez, the majority of the signings that were supposed to perform did perform, while others were more riskier transactions. If we put that into context with the deals we have made, like Andrade and Melo, it's hard to say we have gotten our money's worth.

Who cares what kind of signings Benitez has made. In Italy its different cause he's not in charge of the signings. Hopefully, whoever takes over from Secco is going to do some great signings for us.
