Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader who is facing war crimes charges, evaded capture for a decade by disguising himself in a huge white beard and becoming a celebrated New Age doctor in Belgrade, it has emerged.
Until he was tracked down and arrested by Serbian special forces last night, Dr Karadzic was working as an alternative medicine specialist in a clinic in the suburb of New Belgrade using the false name of Dr Dragan Dabic.
Far from hiding in remote areas like other fugitives such as Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, Dr Karadzic appears to have established himself in the heart of the Serbian capital, and embraced his double life to such an extent that his alias had become a household name in a field where he was said to have accumulated "vast" knowledge.
Those who knew Dr Dabic on the New Age circuit have told The Times that he was regarded as an expert in silence and meditation. One of his lectures was called 'The relationship between calmness and meditation,' and another one was titled 'How to nurture your own energies.'
Healthy Life, a Belgrade lifestyle magazine, this afternoon admitted that it had run a series of articles written by a man called Dragan David Dabic, who said he was a doctor from Belgrade.
Goran Kojic, the editor in chief, told The Times that Dr Dabic had appeared to have accumulated a "profound knowledge of spirituality".
"He introduced himself as a psychiatrist and a spiritual researcher and there was nothing suspicious about him. He had vast knowledge of spirituality, with a particular interest in the relationship between prayer and mediation," he said.
"We then agreed to publish one of his large essays on the subject, which we serialised in several parts and he insisted that he was not interested in any sort of fee for his work, which was really of high standard."
He added: "He was a particularly nice person with profound knowledge of spirituality and spiritual healing techniques.
"There was no way we could have known this person was really Radovan Karadzic. It simply beggars belief. No fiction writer in the world could come up with such an outrageous idea."
A man calling himself Dr Dabic also gave an open-air lecture on healthy living at Belgrade's Ada Ciganlija on the Danube River bank as recently as May 23. During the event, visitors were offered free massages, yoga, tai chi and lessons in capoeira, a Brazilian dance. Dr Dabic was also known to offer his patients 'bio-energy healing' treatments.
