Juve's European Wednesday got off to the best possible start with good news arriving from the NextGen Series before the senior side kicked off their Champions League campaign at the Bridge. Marco Baroni's Primavera saw off the challenge of Group B favourites Paris Saint-Germain this afternoon to secure a 2-0 win, as Ruggiero and Brazilian striker Bonatini both netted after the break.
It was a hard-fought victory sealed only at the death. The French outfit tried to boss the game with their greater physical presence while the Bianconeri looked to make the most of their chances on the counter. Romanian shotstopper Branescu was to thank for keeping the scores goalless at the interval with a couple of decisive first-half saves. But the Bianconeri emerged after the restart and struck on the counter-attack: first through Ruggiero, in the 51st minute, then in stoppage time with Bonatini, who toasted his Juve debut in style. Danish defender Laursen also impressed in his first appearance in black and white.
The win is a huge confidence boost and proof that the lads have recovered following their recent blip against Cagliari. It also means three big points for the NextGen standings as the Primavera now lead Group 2 on four points (having drawn their opening game against Fenerbahce 3-3), a point ahead of PSG and Manchester City. The English club are to provide the opposition for Baroni's troops at the Stadio Moccagatta on 31 October, and this evening they spent a special scout to get the lowdown on the Bianconeri: former Juve midfielder Patrick Vieira, currently the Citizens' football development executive, was in the stands.
The Primavera must now look to carry this form back into the domestic league. After last weekend's break, a trip to Grosseto awaits the Bianconeri next Saturday. But before then there's time to savour the Primavera's NextGen triumph when Juventus Channel show the PSG match tomorrow, Thursday 20 September, at 21:05.
