Following their victory in the Viareggio Cup and the Coppa Italia final, Juventus Primavera missed the chance to finish the championship in the most resounding way. In the quarter finals, Baroni’s lads were beaten 2-0 by Milan.
For the first official clash after more than a month, Baroni had to deal with the negative effects of the international fixtures. Magnusson was still involved with Iceland, Buoy returned from Holland with some physical strain, while Schiavone, Liviero and De Silvestro started from the bench. The coach arranged a 4-2-3-1 system: Branescu between the sticks, Untersee, Gouano, Rubin and Belfasti in defense, Gabriel and Chibsah in midfield, Ruggiero, Beltrame and Spinazzola just behind the captain, Libertazzi.
The ‘Barbetti’ in Gubbio saw a predominance of black & white colours and the Bianconeri felt the boost. After a few minutes, Libertazzi entered the box and Piscitielli was able to save his goal. Juventus controlled the ball possession and just due to a lack of precision they didn’t manage to score.
On the contrary, the Rossoneri went in front after 23 minutes thanks to Ganz who took advantage of a defensive mistake and passed Branescu. The Bianconeri reaction came with two shots from outside the area, thanks to Chisbah and Gabriel who warmed Piscitielli’s hands. Then, Beltrame’s right-footed shot could be dangerous but went high over the crossbar.
The game didn’t change. Until the end of the first half, Baroni’s lads tried to hit the target but didn’t find the right passageway. The break time arrived and the 1-0 result didn’t reflect the development of the game fairly.
The second half saw the same lines up getting on the pitch, as well as the same attitude. The first action belonged to Beltrame who accessed Milan’s area and fell down, but the referee showed him a yellow card for diving attempt. Branescu cleared another shot from Ganz thus keeping the match open. Then Baroni decided to replace Libertazzi and Ruggiero with De Silvestro and Padovan.
The new players had no time to find their position on the pitch and another unexpected letdown occurred: Gouano fouled Comi in the box thus allowing the Rossoneri to enjoy a penalty. Branescu was able and good to divert Comi’s shot but Valoti was in the right place and netted. Moreover, the French defender got injured and was forced to leave the field, thus making room for Garcia.
The Bianconeri tried to surprise their opponents from the counter, and thanks to Padovan they scored but their goal was disallowed by the referee due to offside. Unfortunately, generosity wasn’t enough: the 2-0 result didn’t change. And the Primavera abandoned their run towards the Scudetto.
