Didn't Clemenza have this nasty injury? Unless they really are prodigous talents, players with a such a heavy injury before turning 19 virtually never amount to anything.
Athletic ability obviously plays a huge factor in how well players are going to do in their professional careers. Someone who is less athletic is also more likely to suffer a debilitating injury. If you look at the way Ronaldo and Messi move, you'd say it's unlikely they'll ever suffer an ACL injury, unless they get caught in a freak accident. But in that case it's not necessarily the injury itself that hampers the career, but the overall lack of athletic ability.
So I guess it depends. You have players like Sergio Canales who sort of fizzle out after a huge injury and you have guys like the Quagman who are so athletically gifted they bounce back (IIRC the Quagman played over 25 games for us the season after his ACL tear and he tore it in January or February).
