He got an Italy side that wasnt expected to do anything as far as the quarters and matched the world champions
you want to have the same discussion again for the 10th time? Italy was one of the best teams in the tournament on paper, on the pitch they showed the most up until that game. quarters is absolutely nothing to brag about for a team of that caliber

I've never discussed this before. But from what I remember no one expected shit from Italy especially considering the Marchisio and Verratti injuries. Outside of his defense there wasnt an established player other than De Rossi.

check the thread before the Euro. me and several others were saying how Italy will do great and that people shouldn't underestimate them. Conte shot himself in the foot with some of his decisions, but even then, if youre a supporter of the Italy NT and are proud of a QF exit, no matter if it was against the world champs (who got roflstomped by France the very next round btw), then maybe you should consider supporting someone like Poland or Austria

Hmm Maybe but I dont think the press was rating Italy's chances and after the Marchisio injury I didnt expect anything either.

Yes I agree national teams like Italy, Brazil, Germany etc should always be aiming to win however sometimes when your missing key players you gotta be realistic.

Also I support Afghanistan not Italy. So I would be more than happy to qualify let alone going out in the quarters to Asian champs Australia

im not really paying attention to the press, they probably rated Spain and Belgium among the favorites too, they arent really bright.

Germany was beatable, you could see it from a mile away. also, its not like they played a team full of WC players either. Hector, Kimmich, a retired Schweinsteiger, Howedes, Gomez all played that game. but Conte played a team that wouldn't be able to create a chance against Afghanistan even, when he could have changed something to counter their 3421 instead going for his predictable usual approach. the thing is, im not mad at him for losing to Germany, i cant be as these derbies are always open. disappointed yes, but not mad. what i am mad about is his player selection, only relying on one formation and approach, and winning the damn game vs Sweden thus winning the group and going into the much much tougher side of the draw. these things i hold against him as all were very much avoidable.

and dont worry, Afghans gonna win the Asian Cup, then the Confederation Cup too in 2023. beat Somalia on penalties @Fr3sh

How was Italy one of the favourites, they had Pelle-Eder starting attack. Players like Parolo who never had done anything for Italy and already age 30. Nobody wingers like Giaccherini who was playing for Bologna. Only the defence was quality.

Zizinho is clueless.

Italy actually overachieved, and as much as we can criticize Conte, he did a great job with that Italy team.

What a player he's turned out to be for conte. They can take their eyes of Alex Sandro now.

Yes, i dont understand why the obsession with Sandro. There are other positions they might need reinforcements.

Yeah he left a few more technically gifted players on the bench and at home. But thats Conte and we already know how he is. He decided against playing technically gifted player but instead players who would die on the pitch for him. Imo that worked in the teams favor considering who was available for selection and brought the team farther than most coaches would've. Now if he had Marchisio+Verratti available and Bernardeschi more developed and decided to continue t play those ungifted players then of course he would have been in the wrong.

Conte did great with Italy, I've no idea how he did it, but he somehow managed to program into them dozens of combinations so on the pitch the team worked like little robots, every attack having a very clear plan. we often see this with clubs, but these guys don't train together every day, they get a few weeks to prepare, some friendlies and that's it.

I doubt they could've done much more against Germany, ffs the midfield and attack was Parolo; Florenzi, Sturaro, Giaccherini, De Sciglio; Pelle, Eder, that team wouldn't finish top 4 in Serie A with a regular coach

Its a marketing ploy, the chinese get excited over anything. Its another way to sell the english team brand and its EFL sponsor Carabao.
TBH, sooner or later China will host the World cup.

And you could make a case that why should CL finals only be played in europe?
