Huge game tomorrow between Porto and Benfica, at Porto. This match is the Superliga's equivalent to the Milan-Inter Derby della Madonnina.
man did u get to watch the game? It ended a draw, 1-1. McCarty scored for Porto and Geovanni for Benfica.

Yep. Finally watched a recording of the game last night. It was a good game... and even more entertaining than the Milan Derby. The Porto fans were going a bit wild -- there were a few fireworks on the field (not to mention a lot of balloons -- looked like the grand finale on an old Donny & Marie show or something). And there were a few scuffles between Benfica and Porto fans in the stands that required police intervention.

Porto fielded what looked like a partial side. A number of key players must have been out with injuries. Though Baia, Diego, Maniche, Nuno Valente, Jorge Costa, McCarthy, and Costinha made for a good start. It opened with Benfica dominating possession and taking a few direct shots at Baia. Porto had a couple of counterattacks, but not much.

Later, the game broke open a bit more, with a lot of near misses, hit crossbars, etc. A nice cross from Valente set up McCarthy. And two minutes later Benfica scored off a corner. But despite Porto subbing in Quaresma (who had an OK game) and Benfica subbing in Nuno Gomes, that's pretty much how the match ended.

Another fine match in an unimportant and insignificant league represented by the reigning CL champion and the Euro 2004 runners up. :D (I actually love that people think that. It makes them feel all the more flustered and despondent when a team like Porto wins the CL over all the teams from the media-saturated, overhyped leagues.)

Gol TV doesn't cover the Portuguese Superliga as far as I know. I get it via RTPi, which costs a paltry $4/month for Dish Network subscribers. (It also helps that my wife natively speaks Portuguese. :D )

As I mentioned elsewhere, you get at least 2 matches a week -- Porto/Benfica/Sporting Lisbon and whomever they're playing (if not each other). Plus, like RAI for the Italy NT, they show the U-21 and adult internationals for the Portugal NT.

What an unimportant and insignificant league this is..
I'd say France is more unimportant, guess who is going to win this year? Lyon, guess who'll win next year, thats right Lyon!

The only interesting thing about France, is that if only mathematically the Inter of France can get relegated, nice one PSG!

quite a good game, not much between them. The benfica right back Miguel had a nice game. Juve are keeping an eye on him. Zebina the camelface get out of here! I agree with swag.I enjoy watching Superliga more than a lot games in the big three. 3 teams tied at the top with 42 points. Forca Porto

I only said that because it only had about 20 posts to date and we are more then halfway through the season. No one cares about it.

You're talking about 20 posts in one thread from Feb 20-Mar 2. You're entitled to your opinion, but I suggest that you look around first before making sweeping judgements -- it's hardly flattering to your intelligence.

This is hardly the only thread where the Portuguese Superliga, and their teams and players, have come up. And that includes after Mourinho, Deco, Carvalho, P. Ferreira, et al grabbed headlines in other leagues.

No problem, Dan. Like I said, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. You just have to be a little more careful when flaming the EPL in some parts around here. ;)

European and Portuguese champions Porto crashed to an embarrassing 4-0 home defeat by Nacional Madeira on Friday. The rout will have done little for confidence ahead of their Champions League first knockout round second leg tie at Inter Milan on Tuesday.

Despite their heaviest home defeat since 1975, Porto remained joint top of the Portuguese Premier League with Benfica on 45 points. Benfica can go three points clear if they win their game in hand at home to Gil Vicente on Saturday.

Midfielder Miguel Fidalgo put Nacional in front after four minutes when he tapped in a cross from the right.

Porto fell away badly in the last half-hour, conceding three more goals.

Alonso, who set up the first goal, netted the second from an acute angle after 61 minutes before Nuno Viveiros and Bruno completed the rout.

    Damn!!!

yep. Benfica won by 2-0, and now they're at 48, followed by Porto at 45, and Braga at 44. It's getting even more interesting now...

Looking at your avatar, you made it? Was it flash you used?

Back to the topic at hand, how many Portuguese teams get to the Champions' League.

I'd sure like to see Sporting Lisbon there next term, but thye aren't pulling their weight at all this term.

no i used Fireworks. Flash could work too but it's probably better for more complicated stuff.
