That's not the point. He is a great man who did lots of good in his life, fulfilled many people's lives and generally made a difference. Why do we open threads to honor sporting legends when they pass on, or Agnelli? They're just normal people, right?

Well, its a juventus football forum so you'd think they might have a place on here wouldn't you? They are just slightly relevant to our club!

No, not all of them. I don't remember exactly who has and hasn't been commemorated, but certainly people not related to Juventus in any way have. As long as the person means something to someone (or rather, to more than one member), what's the problem with having a thread about it? The community effect afterall.

Well, I don't agree with it but its your forum :)

What actually bugs me is the people looking down on us and "feeling sorry" for us - how patronising, ridiculous and utterly pompous can you get?!

You mean for not being religious? I do understand that mindset, I think it's only natural if that's what you believe. That it would be wonderful if everyone were to be a part of it. It's only good will really IMO, even if it's expressed in a way that makes it sound pompous.

that would be not cool.

Mmm is a bitter sweet emotion.. i really wanted calcio this weekend.

The pope has done a lot in his life and prayed for everyone. I think that he have to rets in peace now. His time to die has come so i wish he dies quickly to stop his suffering.

I dont see death as a bad thing anyways. Of course natural death

There are those who get their kicks out of tearing down the belief systems of others. I know, because I'm often guilty of it everytime I come across some wide-eyed, green freshman in college who just "discovered" Ayn Rand and Objectivism.

There are a lot of things that religious figures, like the Pope, represent that I have serious issues with. But in a world era where we are often so lacking in figures of any moral authority -- or at least have any noteworthy attempt at doing such -- I welcome those who try to elevate the debate beyond who is making the fastest buck, driving the latest car, exploiting child labor in the latest third world country, etc. We've otherwise lost our Ghandis, our Martin Luther Kings, etc., and they've been replaced with arguably much more cynical role models for the world.

So maybe the Pope is not YOUR Pope. Fine. But he does represent for millions an aspiration to be better people living just lives. And this Pope has done a lot of good, unselfish things for the betterment of all the people in the world. That much, at least, is worthy of respect.

And all if this is particularly relevant to a Juve forum because the respect shown to this man translates to Serie A cancelling their games this weekend.

No one is asking anyone to believe in someone or something they don't want to. They're just asking to spare the selfish act of taking pot-shots at their respected leaders for your own personal self-gratification for just a little while.
