I am planning to do that for ages

I heard that PS2 games can either work on American or the European versions. Is that true?
No, not anymore. In order for you to find one that is backwards compatible through the hardware itself, you will need to find an original 60GB PS3. That one includes the PS2 architecture, the "Emotion Engine", as part of the hardware. It is compatible with all PS2 games. That's the one I have.

For a while, there was an 80GB PS3 that came out that was backwards compatible through software emulation, but the took that out.

Yeah, Snoop, if PS2 compatability is important for you, you have watch out which one you get.

I have a European one (40GB I think) and I can't play PS2 games, not that it matters to me though.

I only want that so I can get cheap PS2 games, since all PS3 games are still original, yeah I am a cheap bastard.

You're not going to be able to find a cheap 60GB PS3 anywhere. That model is "The Holy Grail" of PS3's, for the fact that it plays PS2 games right from the hardware. In essence, if you bought the 60GB PS3, it's as if you got a free PS2 built in.

Actually "The Holy Grail" of PS3s, is the one I have. The 80GB PS3 with backward compatibility for PS2 and PS1 games. I got this one when I bought the Metal Gear Solid 4 Package, and it's just so beautiful to have:cry:

Your 80GB backward compatible PS3 is through software emulation, meaning that not all of the PS2 games will be able to play on it. There is a set list of games that are compatible through the emulation, but they stopped adding new titles a long time ago

The one that I have, the original 60GB model from when it first came out, actually has the PS2 hardware in there, therefore every single PS2 game can be played on it
