Alfonso formerly of Barcelona. Potentially the best Spanish striker of this generation, but was the victim of politics and was put out of the starting line-up for both the Spanish national team and Barcelona regardless of form.
He played for Spain in Euro2000

where they failed against France so it is his fault
he got his chance and wasted it.....

as far Issaksson is concerned
I was reading the summaries of the qualifiers on UEFA.com

and apparantley he was in goal for Sweden's NT

It's his fault that the team lost? I don't see that.

Alfonso is having a new lease of life at his spiritual home of Betis and was it not Raul who lost a lst minute pen against France so i fail to see how Alfonso was at fault with Spain

If Spain would of won the Euro 2000
He might of been picked but
considering the amount of talented strikers in Spain

and Considering he was doing the bench in Barcelona
While Tristan was wipping in Goals for Depor
Morientes was being the jack in the box for Real
and Raul was being world class his WC chances were fairly limited.

If he would of had a good run in 2000 however his bench time in Barcelona would not have effected his pickinh for the NT.

If Raul would be doing as much bench as Alfonso
then I don't think he would of been picked either.....

The thread says players who self destruct, so Alfonso should not be mentioned as he did not and has not self desruct

Mitar Mrkela - Red Star Belgrade player, Late 80's. His style of play provoked interest of almost all giants of football. Flare, creativity, speed, vision. Everything was there, except for guts. He was afraid of getting injured & was famous for doing anything to avoid being tackled. One of the greatest talents ever that went bust.

Darko Pancev - Red Star Belgrade. In the winner of the golden boot 1991. Scored (if my memory serves me well) 44 goals in CL & home championship that year. After that, dissapeared from the face of football.

Steve Harris - Bassist of "Iron Maiden" :D. According to many coaches, the best left wing youth player England have ever seen. Unfortunately (or not;)), he chose guitar over football.

Pancev went to Inter and became a laughing stock unfortunately for him

There are a couple of players right now who seem to have a lot of talent but may self destruct because of their attitude , though i hope I am wrong and they are Zlaltan Ibrahimovic and Cassano

i think so.....

i dont see how he even got 3rd place in the 98 Fifa player of the year awards.

another player who seemed to self-distruct is Oliseh. He's not in the Nigerian NT anymore and i dont hear much about him in Dortmund! (if he's still there)

Lee Sharpe was a left wing wizard for a couple of seasons at ManU but suddenly fell out with Fergie, sold to Leeds and wasn't the same player.

Others who could have been greater players were Paolo Futre, Robert Prosinecki and Florin Radiciou.

A couple of players currently on the slippery slope are JJ Okocha and Ian Harte.
