Gianluigi Buffon admits he doesn’t know whether he’ll still be at Juventus next season and approaches a World Cup record.
The issue arose during a Press conference, when the goalkeeper was asked if Coach Marcello Lippi would remain on the Italy bench after Sunday’s World Cup Final against France.
“I don’t even know if I’ll stay at Juve, so I’m really not going to start discussing the future of other people. What I can say with 100 per cent certainty is that I am happy to be a player in this Nazionale.”
There have been rumours throughout the summer that Buffon was thinking of moving on, as Milan, Real Madrid and Arsenal were touted as the most likely destinations.
Signed from Parma for £32m in 2001 – still a record sum for a goalkeeper – his profile has been further enhanced by this World Cup campaign, in which he has only conceded once from a Cristian Zaccardo own goal.
Going into the Final with France on Sunday, he is just 65 minutes away from setting a new record for World Cup clean sheets. Buffon would beat another Italian, Walter Zenga, who went 517 minutes without conceding in the 1990 tournament.
“In all honesty, this record is of no interest to me,” he assured. “If I make it, then all it’ll mean is that I haven’t conceded for the first 65 minutes of the Final. It’s only a start, not an achievement.”
