I wanted to keep quiet about it! Actually, since its a hardish situation over here, I couldnt afford much. I wanted to buy a regular dslr so I had to skip mirrorless which are quite expensive. Then, after narrowing down choices, it simply had to be in store here so ebay and other options arent valid because we as a non EU state when import we just pay tons of cash for gear when it goes over 50e. So, to get the story short, it went between nikon 3300 and canon 4000d. I opted for canon. It was less expensive plus I got a discount since my friend works in sales. I got the standard kit lense 18-55mm with it. So here is my short journey. First of all I cant say I regret buying it. Not one bit. Simply because I came to love photography. I think its lovely because it lets me feel the nature, the people, and I can even pick between going out with someone taking photos or just go alone -- which I find comforting most of the time. As a total beginner I wanted (still want) to figure out what I enjoy the most. When I first started I was sure Id hate portraits, but when I gave it a go I gotta say I really enjoy it. Plus I hang out with girls, like that can be bad. A week ago some girl asked me to take pics of her after corona and to have sex. I was like... sure... why not...
What I also love about it is the editing. Now, Im not one of those who barely touch anything. I started learning PS and I over edit it, Im even aware of it, but Im trying to figure out everything and even my retouching, curves and everything else. So yea, my stuff is hard on edits at the moment. But I dont get hard on myself because Im aware Im new at it. When it comes to my first buy its going to be 50mm and Ill figure out whether to buy 1.8 or 1.4 (used). Since I dont even go outside for quite some time now, I wasnt even able to take shots. However I do invest some portion of time into videos, watching and learning about photography. I learned quite a lot. Not that it says much because I had no clue 6 months ago. Still, I like it how I know things about shutter speed, F stops, etc. which were totally unfamiliar with me back then.
So yea, I cant wait for this shit to stop so I can go outside and take some pics. I really enjoy it and its a great feeling getting to PC to see how your photos look on a screen. I actually underexpose pretty much everything lol, because I want to edit it raw like that.
I'll write more later on, but the 50 1.8 over the 1.4 ALL THE WAY! imo.

Not good enough at 1.4 and not really better from 1.8 upwards. You simply can't beat the 1.8 in terms of what you get for the money.
If you are looking into portraits, saving up for a used 85 1.8 is the better choice. It's such a great lens.
Also don't forget old vintage lenses. You'll have to check some Canon forums first - as some don't fit (hit the mirror), but knowing you, you will grow to love old manual lenses. M42 lenses are everywhere, on ebay, and probably in your local thrift store too. The adapter is like 10,- and the lenses are cheap as well, and most importantly unique with their own flaws and all kinds of character to them.

I heard so much about it. The 1.8 v 1.4 seems to be endless. From Ive notice both have their own pros and cons. 1.4 surely has the better built quality but thats not quite important to me. I think engine is workign better on 1.8. When it comes to autofocus I think it works better and faster on 1.8. IMO both are equal quality at the lowest aperture, aka neither is quite great at it but both seem really good at f4 and amazing on f8. But its just that 1.4 gets sooo much more light that it makes me think twice as Im pretty sure Id get more photos at night with it compared to 1.8. What do you think? You have more experience in hand while all majority just around theory atm. Oh and Id buy Sigma before any of those but that aint gonna happen due to the cost.
Ah. Lenses... the art of everything. Look, my first buy will surely be 50mm, without a doubt. I think I can practice a lot on plus I love the versatility. I look the style and the dynamic of the picture from that lense and imo chances of me regreting it is going to be zero percentage. However, when it comes to portrait, then Id definitely consider 85mm as possibly the next option. However, Id probably prefer 50 over it because the pic seems warmer to me. 85 makes it quite shallow with a huge focus on the portrait itself, which is not really a bad thing per se but I think a pic loses its personality with it. But dont get me wrong, its surely on the top of my priority in the future.
When it comes to vintage lenses I gotta say that yes, Im fully aware of them. And yes I have not discarded that option surely. I think you are right and Id love to have them. Price is also a huge deal for me as you know my situation quite well. Its an addictive thing and Id personally like to have shitload of lenses even at this point. I just dont have cash for it. HOWEVER, my knowledge when it comes to vintage lenses and canon is close to zero when it comes to both lenses and adapters. If you have some links about that stuff do share pls.
Oh and just to point something out. So far Im taking pics with full manual mode as I like to take control of everything instead of those presets on the camera. The only thing Im not controling at this point is auto focus, I have that on.

Yes, debates are endless, so i'll keep it short and rather simple. The 1.8 is perfectly fine wide open at 1.8 and the difference at higher fstops compared to the 1.4 too will be close to not noticeable in real life. The only thing you really gain, except for build quality, is the extra stop of light, but is that worth the extra money to you? How often will you really shoot at night, and if you do, can't you just up the ISO? For sunrise, sundown, daylight etc. 1.8 will be just fine. For me the extra stop of light wasn't worth the extra money. If i were you, I'd defenitely get the 1.8 first. Shoot with it, and if you really should need the extra light, you can always sell the 1.8 again and go for the 1.4. But i'm guessing you'll like it.

They just have to have the M42 mount, yes. As far as vintage lenses go, M42 is one of the most produced, most common mounts around.

looks like a decent alternative to the fuji lenses, although i'd still prefer the xc 35mm f2.0 for price+af speed, and the xf 35mm f2.0 for af+weather sealing. i wonder how the full reviews would rate it. do you plan to buy it?
