BACKGROUND
Crisis at Juve? Some critics would have you believe so, but a match against inconsistent Perugia could be just the tonic for the Old Lady.
Serse Cosmi's men have had a respectable season and look set for a mid-table finish. Their home form has been strong, although points have been frittered away on the road. Last week Perugia had much of the play against Brescia but ended up losing 3-1. Once again Fabrizio Miccoli was the main danger in front of goal and found the target in the second-half. So impressive has his recent form been, that there is talk of him returning to Juventus in January.
The pint-sized striker was again on the score-sheet on Thursday when helping his team past Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia. Zisas Vryzas also netted in a 2-0 win.
Back-to-back defeats against Brescia and Lazio have left Juventus six points off the Serie A lead and playing catch-up. The loss at Brescia would have been seen as a mere blip were it not for the setback at home to Lazio last Sunday. The Biancocelesti deserved their win, and had it not been for some fine Gianluigi Buffon saves, the visitors could have had more. Lilian Thuram also impressed in the back-four, keeping the in-form Claudio Lopez quiet.
Not too much should be read into the second-string's 1-0 home defeat to Reggina on Wednesday. After all the Bianconeri are through to the next round where they will meet, guess who, Perugia.
Coach Marcello Lippi has told his side's critics to wait before making any rash judgements.
"We are not a team in crisis but we are just catching our breath," he said. "We have given a lot in these last four months in Serie A and in the Champions' League. But from the start of January we will become very competitive once again."
Perugia : Last Six Matches: WWDDLW
Serie A wins against Como and Atalanta have kept Perugia's head well above water. A draw against Piacenza and a defeat last week to Brescia would have been less satisfying.
Juventus : Last Six Matches: DWLWLL
The defeats against Brescia and Lazio have left Lippi's men in a hole. In the Champions League, it is a rosier picture, and with four points from two games following the 4-0 thrashing of Basle, Juve can be confident of going through

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Fabrizio Miccoli (Perugia): the obvious choice given that the in-form striker will be facing the club that owns him. Who'd bet against him continuing his recent fine form with at least another goal?
David Trezeguet (Juventus): the Frenchman will be hungry to impress after so long out. His partnership with Del Piero was highly prolific to say the least last season.
