But then Sarri loses me because he can never just take the easy choice and defend + counter, can't sacrifice tactics a bit so he can rotate the squad, and he's a complete peasant on the sideline.

Sarri finished 2 points ahead of Conte’s team last year, 1 more goal scored, same goal differential and would be in 5th place based on the points table from last year too. And that was considered a big failure season from Conte.

I do think he did good work at Napoli, even if he utterly failed to be competitive outside Serie A (in coppa or europe). What he did with his team was impressive in the league.

This season he's failed to be competitive in PL, but he's met expectations in Europa League for sure (best team in the competition so getting to the final is probably the expectation).

He's a mixed bag as a coach. Tactically inflexible, without much of a plan B, and an inability to rotate (partly because of that tactical inflexibility).
