I think he has been played out of position for most of the time.
Any manager with half a brain would realize that a low talent like sturaro or pepe with proper workrate can cover as a garbage man for midfield but a player with talent and average defensive workrate and a bag of tricks and a hard quick release shot from BOTH feet is way more useful as AM.
