This is the key with him. Pogba is phenomenally talented, but he's a luxury player. You don't sign him unless you have a midfield with other players of immense workrate to make up for his lack of. Similar to how you don't sign Ronaldo in his 30's unless you have an excellent squad to provide service to get the most out of his finishing ability.

He’s not a leader, doesn’t put in the hard work and effort, doesn’t have the work ethic and drive on the pitch. Put him into a solid, high functioning team and I have no problem admitting Pogba could be a top player again (even if inconsistent at this point of his career). But his fanbois and those who have wanted him here the last couple years seem to be forgetting our midfield is arguably worse than Manchester United’s. So… would be a terrible signing.

And by the time this midfield is class enough to have a Pogba type thrive in it, he’ll have aged out of it being reasonable to pay him big money on a contract that would take him into his mid-30s.

Get me Locatelli and another top class younger CM with more drive and fire.

Of course it easier to perform well when you have other good players around you, that is true for every single player. It's pretty obvious that it's easier to perform well when you play with midfield partners like Pirlo, Vidal, Marchisio and Kante compared to when you play with players like Padoin, Struaro, Fred and McTominay.

Imo in midfield the key is to have a good mix of characteristics. Pogba will never be able to do the things Kante does just like Kante will never be able to do the things Pogba does. In a well constructed midfield Pogba doesn't need to be Kante, he brings different qualities into the team.
