Does that midfield really need to extra security a third central defender gives?
It's useful when Juve are playing Pirlo deep, but I suspect that three would be better suited to 4-3-3.
I agree it's better for a 4-3-3 but if Conte doesn't switch the 3-5-2, what choice does he have? Pogba is fine as a DM in a 3-5-2 so I'd guess Conte would be alright keeping him there. Is it overkill? Perhaps, there's alot of strength in the middle there but it might not be a bad thing if Pogba can still distribute the ball adequately, which I think we all believe he can.
Pogba and Vidal are locked in our midfield for next year and the future so either Pogba moves to DM or we buy one, but I think finding a proper regista is much harder than just putting Pogba there even if he is more box-to-box than regista.
He plays there for the French national team already. I have to say, I like Pogba better as a DM personally because he is not just a one-dimensional passing DM. He can do it all, so it's a plus for any formation when your DM can do everything. Like Conte said, he is a modern midfielder.
Personally, something like this is ideal:
Lichtsteiner-Barzagli-Chiellini-Coentrao
Vidal-Pogba-Marchisio
But I would still be alright with Pogba as a DM in a 3-5-2. I think those 3 in a 3-5-2 is not overkill in the Champions League. Pirlo looked overwhelmed with the speed and strength of the top clubs at times.
