Category: Match Reports

Juventus’s 2006 opens with a great win on the Palermo playground, with the home side first taking the lead thanks to Terlizzi then being defeated by a double scored signed by Mutu.

The tempo is very fast from the very beginning. Juventus press the opponents right away, attacking several times with Camoranesi and Mutu, authors of a couple of free kicks that cause the first two thrills of a match that gets hot after the first fifteen minutes. On 13’ minutes, Palermo take the lead: following Corini’s cross from the right, Terlizzi’s successful right-footed shot on the turn finds the goal (1-0). Capello’s side reacts promptly and earns the draw two minutes later: Camoranesi serves for Ibrahimovic, he assists Mutu in the box who hits the crossbar with a header, gets the ball back, dribbles Terlizzi and shoots on goal with a left-footed shot. It’s 1-1. A fine play from Ibrahimovic on 18’ minutes when he tries to heel the ball but Lupatelli is alert and takes hold of the ball. Palermo are dangerous on the counterattack with Caracciolo and Santana, countered by Abbiati, and with Makinwa’s header which ends narrowly out. Juventus, self-confident and determined, take the lead on 33’ minutes: Ibrahimovic feeds Vieira from the edge of the box and the latter passes wide to Mutu who scores the 2-1 goal with a right-footed drive on the run. Capello’s side get dangerous again with Trezeguet who, following Camoranesi’s free kick, drives a header out of the goalline (38’).

The second half starts with a substitution for Palermo, with Bonanni replacing Makinwa. The match is lively in the second half too and Capello’s squad gets close to the third goal on 9’ minutes: Ibrahimovic passes to Trezeguet, the Frenchman shoots beautifully on the turn but his drive is deflected and hits the post. On the following corner, kicked by Camoranesi, Vieira’s header ends out. Palermo fight back with Barone’s attempt on goal, deflected out for a corner by Emerson. On 15’ minutes, a fantastic right-footed kick by Ibrahimovic ends a little high over the crossbar. The Swedish striker performs one of his numbers on 25’ minutes when, with a fine personal play, he moves forward into the penalty box and, hindered by defenders, passes the ball to Camoranesi who, on his turn, passes it back to him but the Swede’s shot is too high. On 29’ minutes, Pessotto must get out because of a muscular problem and he makes way for Blasi. Ibrahimovic is still on the hunt for goals on 32’ minutes, with a header ending high, and again on 34’ minutes when, following Trezeguet’s pass, his right-footed volley forces Lupatelli to save in corner. One minute later, the same happens to Trezeguet’s drive deflected by a defender. In the final minutes, Palermo get dangerous with Caracciolo’s header which ends out and with Brienza’s pass to Caracciolo who is anticipated by Abbiati with a perfect timing. Meanwhile, Capello lines up Del Piero to replace Ibrahimovic. The Bianconeri ends the match in attack, getting close to scoring the third goal when Trezeguet’s fine left-footed shot on the turn is deflected out for a corner by Lupatelli. Juventus earn the three points and continue their race on top of the standings.

    :D

Watched the game today as I had recorded it (Party Marty™ yesterday :p), wasn't very impressed, pretty boring game. Mutu was impressive though, but I think he was the only player to deserve an above average rating.
