I installed Outlook and Thunderbird on the systems in my office, and for some days they worked fine. Suddenly, there are no longer downloading emails, keep saying they can't connect to the server. Any tips?

And to get it straight, I installed either Outlook or Thunderbird depending on each user's preference.

If anyone could be so kind, I am trying to connect to 206.51.231.44. If you wish, I could setup an email account for you (done it already, [email protected], password is password). You want to try it out? Either Outlook or Thunderbird.

There are two common ways to attack this problem.

  1. Get the error message from the client and google it for answers.
  2. Check the server logs for errors.

And what you've said isn't enough, what exactly are you trying to do? Send mail or receive mail? pop, imap or smtp?

As an aside, you should think about securing your server (since it's on the public internet) and disable all services that aren't strictly necessary, cause this doesn't look good from a security point of view:

Code:
 nmap -P0 206.51.231.44

Starting Nmap 4.01 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2006-06-26 16:21 Local time zone must be set--see zic manual page
Interesting ports on 206.51.231.44:

Looks like you have both pop and imap running, either one in both regular and ssl mode, why is all that necessary?

    pop3.

Please just use that test account I set up so I'll know if the outlook or Thunderbird thingy works elsewhere for my mailserver.

    Using Thunderbird 1.5.0.4..

with "test" as username: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server 206.51.231.44 responded: Login failed.

with "[email protected]" as username: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server at 206.51.231.44 responded: Maildir invalid (no 'cur' directory)
