hmm... I made a thread called "other leagues" in the misc soccer. It's been made essential, but people don't really bother to contribute.

There was a discussion about Galata-Fener just days ago, and now the scots... will nobody use the nice little thread I made?

I realise that noone looks at the "essentials" anymore, since there are too many of them.

Too much essential kills the essential ;)

    EDIT:

Thanks Geof. I don't see the stickys because I use the new posts function. I'll merge this one in with the small leagues.

    Short news.

Tonight, the "golden boot award" will be given to the best player in the belgian league.
Last years winner was Vincent Kompany.

For this year, Sergio Conceição is tipped as being the winner. You might remember him from his Lazio days (when they were champion, 2 times best right mid of Serie A).

Other possible winners: Christian Wilhelmsson and Vincent Kompany.

I think that Sergio will win the award. He's a great leader and is actually leading Standard to their first title since 1984 (coach at that time: Raymond Goethals :touched: ).
The only thing that could hold him from winning is his attitude: extremely arrogant , he gets on everybodys nerves, always complaining to refs, he nearly hit a journalist,...

    Sergio:

Pretty weird week-end in the Jupiler league.

It all started with Standard-Zulte Waregem. The leaders lost 1-2, and were very bad... meanwhile Brugge won 3-0 against FC Brussels.

Anderlecht could have taken the lead, but they failed to win against Cercle Brugge, 2-2.

Weird indeed, though it couldn't have worked out better if you ask me ;)

Most noticable player this weekend: Frutos, damn that boy has hair :D

And what do you know, another weird week-end in the Jupiler league.

This time Standard drew against Sint-Truiden, a team fighting against degradation while Anderlecht lost to GBA.
Will Club Brugge once again be the overal winner of the week-end, they will be if they win tomorrow against Roeselare.

I have a strange feeling that Brugge is gonna be champion in may... They were 9 points behind... :wallbang:

well a great weekned for us jambo's,beat hibs 4-1 in the 126th edinburgh derby and celtic threw away a 3-1 lead at home to draw 3-3 with dundee utd,so we close the gap slightly and move 9 points clear of third placed hibs

It would be unexpected, with a new coach and some key players that left in the summer, bu they might have a chance. Anderlecht could become the champions, all they need to do is lose Vercauteren and get themselves a decent coach.
And Standard, they're like the Inter of Belgium: a lot of great players (don't know how they can afford some of them) but not a great team, and very little prizes.

Btw Which team do you support?

    agree:

My first real love in Eerste Klasse was Germinal Ekeren, old style. When Radzinski played there, that was madness. I wasn't die-hard, and when they became GBA, I stopped supporting them.

Today I follow Anderlecht, but I can't say I'm a real fan. Let's say that I sometimes go the stadium. The only team that captivates me for several years now is Juve...

And I kinda follow Union Saint-Gilloise in tweede klasse.

Jambo's, that's Hearth of Midlothian, right? You guys finally signed Mirsad Beslija, the bosnian right winger from Genk? There were some problems in the transfer, but it seems to be Ok now.

And could you tell us a bit about how Thomas Buffel is doing in Rangers?

Beslija is Ok. One of the better right mids of the belgian competition. He's also a Bosnian international. Of course he's not top-class, but he's a good aquisition IMO.
Genk sold him because they are currently launching a very good young generation of Belgians.

After more than a month of absence here's the new update for the Belgian league.

After 26 matchdays (8 to go) the situation is the following:

    1 RSC Anderlecht 26 52
    2 Standard 26 51
    3 Club Brugge 26 50
    4 Zulte Waregem 26 47
    5 Genk 26 44

The Top-3 is again very close to each other.

Anderlecht lost surprisingly 3-0 to Sint-Truiden (known as a traditional Anderlecht-beater).

Club Brugge had a lot of luck in their 2-1 hard fought victory over Charleroi, including a goal of Javier Portillo (ex-Real and Fiorentina).

Standard failed to take the lead on sunday evening, they had a frustrating 0-0 on the field of Lokeren, who outplayed Club Brugge the week before.

It's very hard to say if the small teams get better or if the big teams get worse, anyway, the big guys have a surprisingly low amount of points.
Juve, for example, has 74 points after 29 matches.

    -----------------

-Anderlecht's January signing Frutos (argentine tall striker) is a major succes for the moment. He's a real benefit for the whole team, and scores a lot. Some say he might be selected for the WC, as Figueroa is injured.

    - Vincent Kompany's season is finished. He has had surgery in his shoulder in Lyon by the same surgeon who helped Trezeguet with the same problem. There have been talks between him and JM Aulas (O. Lyon chairman).

    - Standard signed Jorge Costa (ex-Porto) in January. He's good but not international class anymore, IMO.
American DC Onyewu, on the other hand, seems to be fully back. A player to watch in the next WC.

    - You might have noted the 4th place of Zulte-Waregem, a semi pro club that just promoted from 2nd division. They don't seem to choke. way to go guys!
Some big clubs (Auxerre & Dortmund) are interested in their big targetman: Ibrahim Salou.

    - Beveren finished the partnership between the club and Jean-Marc Guillou, the guy who created the academy in Ivory Coast. Some of the country's greatest players passed through Beveren to get to the higher level, including Eboué, Yapi-Yapo, and Juve "target" Yaya Touré.

    -------------------------------------------

As fo the enormous betting scandal, I refer to the thread that Seven created.
