One of you guys recommened using it, I don't remember who, perhaps Erik I am not sure. So I downloaded it today and I like it. But technically speaking, what will I be getting if I make the change from Microsoft Office, and what will I forgoe?

And if I decide to make the change, should I remove or unistall Microsoft Office? I would love to remove it I just feel it is sucking up my system's juice....

mikhail is the biggest supporter of OO around here. The difference is that the office suite, while being very similar, is not identical to Ms Office so if you have a religious attachment to the latter, OO may seem a bit bleak to you. The file formats are also different, OO does everything it can to read MsO formats correctly but since they are closed, it's not perfect.

And if you have one, you probably don't need both. Needless to say OO is free and will remain free. You can also get free spell checkers and grammar checkers for just about any language (even though they don't publicize this well enough IMO).

It was me you dolt... :D

..and I wouldn't suggest removing it, since you probably paid all of that 10 riyals for a bootleg copy of M$ Office (;)), but don't open it, and it won't use any RAM... You never know when you just might need it... :sigh:

mikhail himself has said that its not yet quite as good
I think that if you're mostly a Word (= OO Writer) user like me, it's about caught up. However, Microsoft's Excel (= OO Calc) is just plain faster and Powerpoint (= OO Impress) is a bit fuller featured, I think, though not so much so that you'd miss it. If you use Access (= OO Base), the Open Office equivalent is supposed to be woeful - it's not had nearly as much development.

The benefits are two-fold. Firstly, OO is free and staying that way. If you get Office for free, don't bother with OO. If not, it's a nice saving of a couple of hundred dollars.

The second thing is the file formats. Microsoft's .doc, .xls, etc. are all kept private. That's a pain in the behind - you need an M$ product to open your files. Open Office will open and save to those formats too, though there are some interoperability issues. I've never had a problem with a .doc file, but I can definately see issues if you are a real power user in Excel. That said, the interoperability is approaching that of the various versions of Office (95, 97, 2000, NT, XP, etc.). Open Office has its own file formats too, and can save directly to a pdf file if you want. Its support for .rtf and .csv is supposed to be better than M$ Office's (which seems odd - they'd be hard to screw up).

Anyway, in summary: Open Office is free, but not as good unless you mostly use Word.

Try opening a .doc with a bunch of tables and pictures, it's a painful affair. Of course mostly because of the way formatting is done in .doc's to begin with but hey.

Have you done it with version 2.0? It's come on a long way. Frankly, try opening something written in Word XP using Word 97 and you'll see why the .doc format is so hard to handle.

No, don't think I've tried that.

OO Impress exports to swf, and I like the fact that you can export directly to PDF in OO...

But using it with MSO formats is a real pain, yes.
