We Should Have Knocked Out Italy - Gullit
Former Dutch football star Ruud Gullit is worried that helping Italy to stay in the tournament with the win against Romania could come back to haunt them.
Ahead of yesterday night's exciting climax of the Group of Death involving Holland, Italy, France and Romania, many people who knew a little bit about the Dutch mentality ensured fearful Italian and French fans that their meaningless game against Romania would not be 'fixed'. As you'll know, if Holland, who had already won the group, had allowed Romania to win, both World Cup finalists would be out.
In the end, the Oranje did do their sporting duty and easily beat the Romanians 2-0, thereby allowing Italy, who beat France by the same score, to go through. One Dutchman who knows the Italians well, former AC Milan star Ruud Gullit, is somewhat worried that helping the Azzurri to stay in the tournament might turn out to be a mistake later on.
"I hope the win against Romania won't turn out to be a mistake later on," he said, "because having the possibility to eliminate both Italy and France was a great chance. Especially Italy.
"Italy can create problems at any moment, the fact they are still in the tournament could cause problems in the future. The Italians are like that: it seems like they are not playing that well, but with the first chance they get, they score. They are very good at taking advantage of every opportunity, and they have great experience. That's why I think they can still achieve a lot in this tournament."
Considering also that Italy started off with a humiliating 3-0 loss to the Dutch in their opening game, the Oranje might not fancy meeting a vengeful Azzurri team again in an eventual semifinal...
