Don in contract U-turn
Roberto Donadoni is edging closer to agreeing a contract extension with the Italian Football Federation before Euro 2008.
The Azzurri Coach had looked set to arrive at the tournament with his future up in the air.
Don’s current deal will expire a fortnight after events in Austria and Switzerland and contract negotiations over a renewal have broken down on several occasions.
It has been reported that the FIGC’s determination to insert a rescission clause that will see Donadoni replaced should Italy fail to reach the semi-finals this summer has prevented a deal being struck.
However, it seems that Don is rethinking his position and could accept an offer from President Giancarlo Abete this evening at a meeting in Rome.
The proposal is expected to involve extending the contract until 2010 with a wage increase from around £1.1m to £1.6m per year.
But Donadoni will have to accept the clause that allows Abete to axe him should he fail to impress this summer.
The former Livorno tactician is being encouraged by many to accept an extension because it could give the Italy side greater stability ahead of Euro 2008.

You know I don't mind if Donadoni signs this contract as long as it has that clause mentioned. I just don't see us winning Euro '08 as much as I want us too. I am not sure who the many that are encouraging him to accept the extension for 'greater stability' but I'm am sure that having Donadoni for stability isn't even logical. Whatever.

Toni - I have watched a ton of bayern games this year and toni literally is just getting better and better with each game. He's much more of a complete player than he was in 2006... hopefully he can get an understanding with camo and ADP in the short time they play together. If toni is playing as good in the euro's i think we might make it to semi's or even finals. He's been a monster, if he has a great euro and leads the team to victory, i think he will get Ballon d'Or over ronaldo.

Donadoni has been in the hot seat since he took over. That's to be expected when you take over a World Cup winner. But he did qualify the team for the Euro tournament. His contract expires at the end of 2008 and he was looking for an extension.
The contract discussion is overshadowing preparations for the tournament. That kind of distraction was the last thing either party wanted.
Reports say Donadoni was offered a two-year extension that was geared to the national team's performance, including reaching the semifinals at Euro. It did include a substantial buyout if Donadoni was fired.
If that was meant to calm the waters, no one had better get in a boat.
Reports say Donadoni was not impressed.
He now has to make decisions he knows will determine whether he remains Italy's coach after Euro. He'll have to decide who among a big crowd of strikers he'll select for Euro. Luca Toni is a given. So is young Marco Borriello.
But one of the key inclusions will be a striker who will likely come off the bench to give the Italians a boost.
Popular Juventus star Alessandro Del Piero is making things difficult for Donadoni. Del Piero has found the fountain of youth this season. The almost 34-year-old is scoring goals like he's 10 years younger. Two years ago, not many would have believed this would have been an issue. Del Piero looked like a player headed downhill on a bike with no brakes.
This year with Juventus, he's playing full games and scoring goals, 18 of them so far. Making a decision to leave Del Piero out of Euro is even more difficult because of Del Piero's popularity. Del Piero is a classy guy and the Italian media loves him.
But there's another 34-year-old who is potting big goals. Milan's Pippo Inzaghi has picked the last two months to be at his poaching best. Inzaghi is the kind of player no one notices until he puts the ball in the net. He's quicker than Del Piero and has a reputation for scoring big goals.
Which brings us to Antonio Cassano. He has enormous potential and is much younger and stronger than the other two. He plays the game on the edge with an edge.
He would be the most dangerous selection for Donadoni and the manager likely will not take that risk. There are too many other safer choices.
Donadoni isn't one to tip his hand, but if one can interpret recent interviews, he seems to be leaning toward Del Piero. Del Piero's advantage over Inzaghi is his ability to distribute the ball and Del Piero remains dangerous when he's standing over a free kick.
