Donadoni To Select Chiellini & Snub Aquilani?

Latest reports emerging from Italy suggest that Italy national team boss Roberto Donadoni will take Giorgio Chiellini to Euro 2008, and leave Alberto Aquilani at home.

Chiellini has had a magnificent season for Juventus, and he also played his part in Italy’s qualification to the Euros, when he came on as a late substitute in the crucial decider with Scotland, winning the free kick that led to Christian Panucci’s winning goal.

Despite this fine form, Chiellini’s place in Donadoni’s squad was believed to be in doubt after he was not selected for last month’s friendly with Spain.

However last weekend the 23-year-old scored twice for Juve in the 5-2 thrashing over Lazio, and his performance is said to have convinced Donadoni to take him to Euro 2008.

Donadoni has decided that he will choose six midfielders. These will be the Milan trio of Massimo Ambrosini, Rino Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo, Roma’s Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta, as well as Juventus’ Mauro Camoranesi, who is likely to play in a more advanced position on the right wing.

Aquilani, who had been expected to be called up, has struggled a little in recent matches. Donadoni believes that Chiellini will add some extra cover in defence, and can also be used as an emergency on the left of midfield, like he did against Scotland.

It is also speculated that Milan’s in-form Pippo Inzaghi, who has hit eight goals in his last four games, is looking a good bet to pip Marco Borriello to the role of understudy for Luca Toni.

If Donadoni is going to judge Aquilani based on his recent form. He should also take a look at Pirlo and Gattuso's form this season. I would love to see Donadel or Montolivo in the squad. A worthy risk :p

What I was thinking. If we really had to base everything on club form, Cannavaro wouldn't be in the squad since ages
And Del Piero would be. :p

Anyway, players like Pirlo and Gattuso have always played well for the NT, and the morale of the team would lower severely if they were dropped. I would really like Chiellini to be called, but if Donadoni felt that they were covered enough in the back, I wouldn't mind because he will be going to the Olympics anyway. And of course I would like Aquilani in the squad, but once again if he isn't there, he will be at the Olympics.

Chiellini being called up shouldn't even be a question.
I'm down but we should replace Ambrosini instead of Aquilani. Ambro sucks and is an overrated Milan fag. I also don't like Panucci being called up he isn't any good.

These are my callups:

GK: Buffon, Amelia, Sereni

DF: Grosso, Chiellini, Leggrotaglie, Cannavaro, Materazzi, Zambrotta, Oddo

MF: Pirlo, Gattuso, De rossi, Aquilani, Camoranesi, Perrota, Rosina, Palombo

ST: Del Piero, Toni, Di Natale, Inzaghi, Quagliarella

Not too sure about Legro..Barzagli performs well with the Azzurri. TBH, it doesn't really matter. As much as I would love to see Rosina going to the Euro's I can't see it happening.

I agree if Rosina is at anything this summer it will be the Olympics. He should be in the euros tho Italy could really use him. When was Barzagli good with the Azzurri? He had an alright one and a half games in the world cup but that was two years ago. His ass has been saved by Canna every time he plays. His tackling is good and he doesn't allow players to straight by him but he is always out of position and whenever he plays our defense always seems to have this gaping whole straight down the center that he should be covering but he isn't. It seems whenever he plays he is doing well but for some reason opposing teams are able to go past our defense much easier than they should. Am i the only person that notices this? TBH if i were Donadoni i would try a
Canna-Chiellini central partnership, that would be mean.

Totally agree about Rosina.

Barzagli just plays better with Canna or Materazzi beside him. I don't expect him to start, I just think he is an okay back-up. We all know Canna-Materazzi will be the central partnership, but I would love to see Canna-Chiellini.

Anybody considering Maggio?
I've always liked Maggio and I even wanted him here last year. TBH, I don't think he has enough experience yet, so maybe 2010.

Barzagli has been very good for Italy in the qualifying rounds.I dont know how you can say that he hasnt had a good game for Italy since the world cup.He only played a little part in the world cup,and he's been a regular because of Materazzi's injuries, and he has totally repaid Donadoni's faith in him.Id even say that as far as the Italy NT is concerned,Barzalgi has been the best defender in the qualifying rounds. The fact that Italy have a gaping hole down in the center is not Barzagli's fault. The DMs need to come into account too.And no,Cannavaro has not been saving Barzagli's ass. He's done very well on his own,and he probably deserves to start ahead of Materazzi.

Dude do you remember when he kicked the ball straight at Sheva in the azzurris away game against Ukraine and if it wasn't for Buffon that would have thrown the game. Do you remember against Scotland as soon as Barzagli was subbed on Scotland began breaking through our center defense with ease. How about the away match against France? Barzagli is overrated. Gamberini and Leggrotaglie deserve a spot ahead of him at the euros.
