Alex historic Capocannoniere
Sunday 18 May, 2008

Alessandro Del Piero is only the second player ever to win back-to-back Capocannoniere titles in Serie A and B.

The Juventus captain topped the scorers’ charts last season on their way to promotion with 20 goals and has improved upon it with his 21 in Serie A.

The brace in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Sampdoria took him up to 21, beating teammate David Trezeguet on 20.

The Capocannoniere for most of the campaign, Marco Borriello, finishes third with 19 for Genoa.

Del Piero makes history, as the only other player to ever achieve this feat was Paolo Rossi in 1977 and 1978.

The 1982 World Cup winner managed the double with the Vicenza shirt, scoring 21 in Serie B and 24 in the top flight a year later.

This has also been Del Piero’s most prolific ever campaign, matching the personal best of 21 in 32 appearances in 1997-98.

Undoubtedly the record will help boost calls for Del Piero’s inclusion in Italy’s Euro 2008 squad.

As things stand in terms of speculation, DP would be the only experienced striker to go to the Euros and I dont know how wise that would be. Its unfortunate that Boriello might go just because he's the closest Toni-like striker in stature even though his finishing is no where near imo. Him and Quag should not be going. I feel this way especially about Quag, he's not spectacular in any regard. At least Di Natale is quick (could actually be the quickest player going) and more creative. He doesnt offer anything vast enough for such a competition.

With DP, Cassano, Di Natale, Inzaghi and Toni, you know you have 2 master finishers and three forwards who can create their own space (and for the finishers too) to pitch in with a goal as well

My starting 11 would be

----------------------------Buffon-----------------------------
--Zambro---------Canna------------Chiellini----Grosso----
----------------------------Pirlo-------------------------------
----------------Ambrosini-------------DDR-------------------
--------------Camo------------------------DP----------------
--------------------------Toni---------------------------------

But spectacular goals dont frequent themselves the way spectacular performances or untidy goals do and in a tournament where it takes 6 games to win, i think its more important to have the performers and the guys who get the job done in whatever way

I don't see the point of speculating what could be done with the Italy side.

The team will almost certainly be-

Buffon

Zambrotta-Cannavaro-Materazzi-Grosso

Gattuso-Pirlo-De Rossi

Camoranesi------Di Natale

Toni
