Ok, then if you are skeptical regarding the toll of death in the current explosions, you should also be skeptical about the rumours of what happened during Saddam's reign in the iraqi prisons...
I am, that's what I've been trying to say. I told you I know very little about the situation in Iraq, whether it is the current situation or the situation when Saddam still ruled.

I also said "The Kurds disagree", not that I did ;)

I don't deny that many people were humilated during Saddam's years, but the solution was not by rescuing those probable victims and shooting them later by alien troops...
Well it's a given getting shot isn't exactly ideal...

Do e a favour, Jem, and tell me why only North Korea should be under sanctions for a guilt that it shares with many countries in this World!!!

Having nuclear weapons?? So what?? Are they threatening two neighbour countries?? So what?? I know a country that threatens 20 neighbour countires since 60 years by the same weapons without seeing anybody saying any word about sanctions or even criticizing...

What a joke of a world we're living in these days...

And about the pictures which were claimed to be from North Korea, I think you all know that photoshop can do worse pictures, and you can find such scary pictures in all the countries of the World (In the poor neighbourhoods, at least)...

And let's assume that those pictures were correct and exclusive only in North Korea. Will the solution be occupying the country and killing hundred innocents just because they don't know their good??
Ok, first of all.. I don't want the nuclear arms race to continue, at all.. And in my post, I was referring to yesterday's (apparant) events. I don't like it when any nation decides to test their nuclear weapons. But we have to separate the issues here. You come at me with stuff about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Iraq, things that were/are terrible, I agree, but we should really deal with one issue at a time here. I'm not saying North Korea should be under sanctions for having the weapons but I think they should be for using them, even if it was 'a successful test'. I'm not gonna go into the Iraq-issue with you because, quoting Erik, I should refrain myself from going into something I only know so much about. But we're discussing the events of yesterday in this thread, and I believe that any nation which decides to put in use nuclear weapons should be considered a threat to the world peace. I know I may sound like you-know-who right now but this truly how I feel. Am I not allowed to be concerned when a hermit nation like this one, communist and totalitarian as it is, detonates a nuclear bomb underground?

Your contribution to this debate overall is: "If one nation has nuclear arms, all the others should have them too." .."If one nation does evil, every other nation should too." .. I'm sorry man, but I just don't think we'll be better off by this mentality.

Read into my comments what you will, but let me just performatively declare right now that I do not want any small nation to be in possession of nuclear weapons. Realistically, you will never get the superpowers to get rid of theirs, so that's a thought one must shelf immediately, but one can stop the spread of these weapons by going after 'the others'. I'm talking against many of my own principles here, I really am, but I just can't see us coming anywhere near to world peace if all these small parts of the World acquire such weapons.

As for what you said about killing innocents in North Korea: No, I do not want that to happen.

Well, you're so close to my target in my posts, but I didn't say that all the nations SHOULD have nuclear weapons...

I said "If many countries have those weapons, why are we crying and whinning because another country got into the nuclear race??"

I never was enthusiastic to spread the nuclear culture over the world, but the thing is "What is the size of North Korea's nuclear arms related to the overall nuclear arms in the World??"

Because a small pissed off nation, poor and totalitarian should not, I repeat not, be in the possession of such weapons. Why? Because practically the bombs are put in the hands of one man. Risky.

I know how you feel. But I think it's better to have an unbalanced solution than a more widespread nuclear world.

Political bs aside, this will ignite a nuclear arms race across asia. Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan, Australia wont honour any non-proliferation agreement with this in mind. This is the last thing China would want, so i expect them to finally make a serious effort to sway N.Korean plans. Something like 70% of N.Korean fuel comes from China. If anyone can stop them, its the Chinese.

The era of nuclear weapons proliferation died a long time ago. The americans, Russians, Chinese, etc got their nukes in a totally different political and historical environment. All the big nuclear powers have actually been cutting back on their stockpiles for a while. Rogue states like N.Korea and Iran acquiring nukes serves no real purpose.
