It's a joke. I can't believe people are actually defending this move, let alone supporting it as somehow good for football.

And no, neither Barca nor Madrid have ever done anything remotely similar to this.

In the last 30 years the biggest transfer record fee jump was by Inter when they bought Vieri for 32 million pounds, a jump of 49% from Denilson's transfer fee of 21.5 million pounds a year earlier.

Zidane was a 26% on Figo's transfer fee. And since those were both by Madrid, Zidane was only a 30% jump on Crespo the previous non-Madrid record.

C. Ronaldo was a 43% jump on Kaka.

Even if we go all the way from Crespo to Bale, in which Real Madrid continually broke its own transfer records over a period of 13 years... the jump for that entire period is 83.3%. And 3 of those players were Ballon d'Or winners.

Throw in Pogba and you get a rise in transfer record from 2000 to 2016 of 91%. 1.91X increase. Over 16 years.

PSG on the other hand just raised the transfer record by 124.7%. 2.1X the previous record. In a single season. For Neymar. Who is not a Ballon d'Or winner or the best player in football (maybe top 5). FFP is an absolute joke if UEFA don't bitch slap this club right out of the CL.

It will certainly distort the market. Mbappe, Dembele, and other top talents with Ballon d'Or potential are no longer going to be sold in that 100-120m price range. It's going to spike the transfer market. A transfer market that really hadn't increased all that much post-Zidane, over 15 years. 75 mil to 105 mil. All of a sudden PSG throws out 220 mil. And the other members of the uber-rich are going to want to compete with this. If FFP shows no teeth here there will be no reason for the owners of clubs like ManCity, ManU, Chelsea, etc to hold back anymore for a semblance of following the rules.

Unless a European super league is forthcoming, eventually we will not be able to compete with teams that can spend over half our yearly revenue on a single player. The richness of the EPL was already taking football in that direction, but this just accelerated that process by several years. PSG jumped the gun on everyone. Increasing the transfer record by 115mil, over 2X is obscene and should not be allowed.

I don't have any issues with the Neymar transfer in terms of principle. I am surprised he went along with it and how much PSG decided to spend for him but in principle, richer clubs always poached players from poorer clubs its just this time its a rich, small seemingly unattractive club poaching players from a less rich (but still very rich) big and attractive club.

Just in the last window we did something similar in inflating Pogba's price to 100 mill and in activating the release clauses of Pjanic and Higuain against their club's wishes. In the Higuain purchase in specific, we were the richer club forcing a key player transfer at an inflated price from the poorer club. If we had PSG money, I'd be more than happy if we had done this to Barca to bring Neymar (its a massive financial risk imo though). The principle is the same its just a question of degree.

The reason I don't like this is that I feel we are being priced out of the market for top players but I felt no sympathy to Napoli when we did the same to them.

They took a massive financial risk in doing that. There is a good chance this doesnt work out for them and they end up being just as good or only slightly better in the end. One player can only do so much (he is not Messi) and even if he does become as good, that doesnt necessarily translate into CL titles. Football success has too many variables. A lot of this transfer is Qatar buying political influence in France in my view.

I agree it has changed. But nowhere near in line with teams spending 220 million on a single player. And you know what. I don't have so much of a problem with that if a team were selling to cover a significant portion of that. But PSG is operating on an over 200 mil negative this year, and 800 mil negative over the last 6 years in the transfer market.

Real and Barca are both in the -150 mil range for that entire period.

PSG, ManCity, and ManU are operating at a ridiculous loss in the transfer market post 2010. It needs to be curtailed and capped. There should be a hard cap of some sort over a period of 3-5 years. Something reasonable. Otherwise a few teams are just going to spend everyone else into the poor house.
