Vidic took 6 months to settle in at United, his first 6 months he looked like such an ordinary player.

Players take time to settle in at new leagues, especially when they are at a higher level than the league they used to play in. That being said, I never watched Mertens play before he joined Napoli, and i'm not sure whether his current form is reflective of his ability, or if he's punching above his weight, but he has been really good over the past month or so.

Heitinga meeting today

I thought Heitinga left Everton because he wasn't playing and was worried about his place in the Dutch squad/team for the World Cup.

Is he going to get enough playing time at Roma to improve his chances?

I actually found Napoli more convincing and dangerous when they had the Lavezzi-Cavani-Hamsik combination and Mazzarri's 3-5-2 working.

That's because they'd be playing that system - and buying players to suit that system - for several years.

Napoli are still very much in a transitional period of moving away from 3-5-2.

By the end of the summer mercato, if they handle it well, they should be starting to look like a team more suited to 4-2-3-1.

He might get more minutes than Burdisso but I highly doubt he'd bench Benatia and Castan. He might get more time next year if they enter CL, but for this WC, I highly doubt he'd get a fair shot to prove himself in Rome. Then again, it's not official, they might keep Burdisso till the summer.
